Some teams have hit the halfway point in the league season, which means the stakes of every game will only begin to raise in the coming weeks. Here is how they all currently stack up in this week's edition of the power rankings. 1. Wright State The Raiders had the weekend off and secured a 93-83 win over Youngstown State. The best news for Wright State?

If there was any doubt among those who follow Oakland about its status as a Horizon League contender after a home loss to Wright State, it probably no longer exists. In a matchup that involved the two teams that were tied for second in the league standings, Oakland took an early lead against Green Bay and never looked back. The Golden Grizzlies took their first lead at 8-7 and did not trail again.

The Golden Grizzlies women’s basketball team delivered a rivalry win on Sunday, January 18, taking down the Detroit Mercy Titans 80-70 at Calihan Hall in the first of two Metro Series games this season. The win marks Oakland’s sixth on the season and third in the conference, lifting the Golden Grizzlies to seventh in the Horizon League standings. Freshman Makenzie Luehring played a massive role in securing Oakland's win, scoring a season-high 25 points while dishing out four assists.

CSU (5-13, 1-6 Horizon League at the start of the week) was able to capture another conference victory after being blown out by Green Bay. Without its leading rebounder, CSU managed to squeak by Youngstown State and keep its season’s aspirations alive. At home against Green Bay (10-8, 5-2 HL) on Jan. 15, Josiah Harris was out again. The regular backup crew started for the Vikings — Tre Beard, Jaidon Lipscomb, Dayan Nessah, Preist Ryan and Holden Pierre-Louis. 

It was a pretty stable week for the #HLWBB Power Rankings, though IU Indianapolis' shocking upset of Youngstown State drove a bit of shuffling.

40 minutes of play was not enough to decide Robert Morris University’s two-game road trip. The Colonials split their pair of overtime contests against Horizon League opponents Indiana University Indianapolis and Northern Kentucky University. The Colonials fell to IU Indy 96-93 on Jan. 15 as the Jaguars picked up their first Horizon League win of the season. RMU dropped to 3-5 in conference play, and Ryan Prather Jr.

The Youngstown State Penguins' basketball teams suffered some hard-luck setbacks on Saturday afternoon, marking the first time since November 23, 2024 that both Ethan Faulkner and Melissa Jackson's squads have lost games on the exact same day. When the IU Indianapolis men's basketball team (5-16) tipped off in their gold "Metros" jerseys against Detroit Mercy (8-10), it appeared that they were all but ready to continue what they had going on Thursday night when they upset Robert Morris for their first Horizon League win of the season. Freshman forward Reece Hagy, who hit a big free throw late in overtime against the Colonials, started off this one with a steal, a three-pointer, and a rebound before the game was three minutes in as the Jaguars grabbed a 5-0 lead.

Often in sports, a team is judged by how it responds to adversity. Particularly in a long season like college basketball, there will almost undoubtedly be some bad breaks throughout the year.  For Oakland, adversity hit this week, with a double-digit loss to Wright State. The opportunity to bounce back presented itself on Thursday, with a nationally televised game at Milwaukee. 

The Youngstown State Penguins men's basketball team (9-10, 2-6 Horizon) couldn't weather the road storm in their 93-83 loss in a rematch against the Wright State Raiders (12-7, 7-1 Horizon), the Horizon League's first-place team, on Thursday night inside the Nutter Center. YSU beat WSU seven-consecutive times prior, and it's also the first time since 2022 that the Penguins have lost to the Raiders at the Nutter Center.

NKU hosted the Detroit Mercy Titans on Thursday. Both teams were looking to overcome previous bad performances, as Northern Kentucky looked to bounce back after an underwhelming loss at Green Bay, and UDM hoped to snap a five game losing streak. The game started quickly for the Norse, but after a solid response from UDM, NKU coasted to a 96-71 victory.

Ben Howlett has his first career Horizon League win as the men's head basketball coach at IU Indy, and he won't be the only one to remember it. The Jaguars (5-15 overall) needed execution down the stretch after comebacks in both halves plus overtime to down the Horizon League defending champions, 96-93. Robert Morris (11-8 overall) has now lost three straight, and this one also broke a five-game winning streak RMU had over IU Indy, which dates back to February of 2023.

Creating Podcasts and Content

NKU announced in 2023 that it would be adding six athletic programs. The programs that have already debuted are men's and women's swimming, men's and women's triathlon and women's stunt. The last of the programs, still yet to debut, is the men's volleyball team. The wait is over, as the squad will play its first match in program history Today at 7 p.m.
