The supposed next German chancellor failed to get a majority by 6 votes today to be confirmed. Apparently they will have a 2nd round today. For the stability of Germany and Europe, Merz really needs to win and soon.

Yet another step in this administration's plan to control what people learn about US history. Just like Putin and Xi Jinping.
I’ve been honored to serve as the @apsa.bsky.social rep on the committee (a role mandated by Congress) since 2020 + to have chaired the committee since 2021. Congress understood in creating its 1991 statute governing our work the importance of “thorough, accurate, and reliable” accounts of the past
Unhappy to confirm that the entire Historical Advisory Committee at the State Department received termination notices this afternoon (myself included). The HAC, set up by Congress, oversees the office that produces the FRUS series. history.state.gov/about/hac/in... 1/

In the midst of these dark days, this was such a bright spot in my life.
Today, I’m pleased to honor Dr. Harrison, a distinguished scholar, who has made German history tangible for people in the US and beyond. Through her inspiring work she became a leading transatlantic voice—and an outstanding ambassador of German-American friendship. Thank you for your advocacy!

The list of demands the Trump administration sent Harvard is unconstitutional and absolutely astonishing. I'm so glad Harvard refused to acquiesce. No university should. www.washingtonpost.com/education/20...

The administration demanded changes to policies and governance due to allegations of antisemitism, illegal DEI. Harvard called the directives unconstitutional.

So proud of my alma mater.
Every college and university should do this to remind Americans that attacks on these institutions are actually attacks on all of us.
Harvard redid its whole homepage to push back against the administration’s demands. I mean, this is just a website but I think it’s kind of a great PR move: www.harvard.edu

Glad to see the live press conference taking place now announcing the agreement on a new coalition government in Germany. Europe and the future of democracy need this.

I am devastated, heartbroken and angry that DOGE effectively shut down the nonpartisan Woodrow Wilson International Center for Scholars in DC today. Nothing can ever take its place.

He doesn’t have the authority to do this despite the first few words of the EO.
Trump is eliminating Wilson Center, a stellar US foreign policy study establishment. Along with it goes the Kennan Institute - one of the best Russia study institutions.
I was fortunate to be a Kennan Fellow in 2017.
Such a loss

Universities can’t think they will ride this one out. Their economic power in communities across the country is significant. Time to band together to stop the assault against higher ed.

Today in the Oval Office was the equivalent of Jan. 6 in demonstrating this administration’s contempt for democracy. Absolutely disgusting.

This map of German election results shows the legacy of the division is very strong 35 years since unification. The far right AfD dominated in the east, and the CDU dominated in the west with some big areas of SPD support and smaller areas of support for the Greens.

I'm cautiously optimistic that the German election results will mean the CDU/CSU and the SPD won't need another party to form a ruling coalition. The government will be more stable without a 3rd major party in it. The Greens could be a key part of the opposition instead of just the AfD dominating.
