This year, I’ve written articles for @crooked-marquee.bsky.social on IN THE REALM OF THE SENSES and SALÒ. What should I do for an encore? COME AND SEE, perhaps?

“Those willing to subject themselves to it can find Pasolini’s unintended swan song to be a rewarding experience,” @hoodedjustice.bsky.social writes of ‘Salò,’ “even if the most typical responses it elicits are revulsion and nausea.” crookedmarquee.com/even-after-5...

Letterboxd/Filmsky Last Four Friday

A surreal silent fantasy from René Clair, a supremely entertaining pressure cooker from Josh Safdie, the year’s second oddball from Osgood Perkins, and a cineaste’s dream from Richard Linklater.

They're only seen in the background of one brief shot, but I was naturally intrigued by the white hoods worn by two of the mental patients in René Clair's hour-long silent feature PARIS QUI DORT a.k.a. THE CRAZY RAY.

I took a deep dive into the depravity of Pasolini’s SALÒ for @crooked-marquee.bsky.social. Some once-shocking films lose their power to appall over time. This is not one of them.
Even After 50 Years, Pasolini’s Salò Retains the Power to Shock and Repulse — Crooked Marquee
Pier Paolo Pasolini’s final film is just as hard to watch as it was half a century ago, but it’s even more necessary today.

Ok BlueSky: what are your favorite history books in terms of sheer page-turning, narrative propulsion? Thinking along the line of Killers of the Flower Moon, etc. Nonfiction chronicles that read like novels or movies.

Last night I bore witness to the Marty Supremacy. 2025 has been a good year for movies, and this is one of the best.

Catching a screening of KEEPER this afternoon, and I know so little about it (I saw the teaser at the end of THE MONKEY, but don’t remember any details), I’m effectively going in blind.

When it comes to film criticism, there may be no statement I like less — or find less edifying — than “X is the movie Y wanted to be.”

Back when I started gathering intel on movies featuring hooded characters, I was pointed in the direction of 1966's THE ROUND-UP for its scenes of prisoners in white hoods. Now that I've finally seen it, I can see why.

The definition of a “mixed bag”: the propulsive new Edgar Wright, a sad Asylum knock-off, a twisted Japanese drama, and a squishy summer camp horror.
