I’ve just finished this wonderful graphic novel version of Phil Earle’s When the Sky Falls and it’s such a powerful book. Friendship between a boy and an ape, as well as a boy and a girl - both beautifully examined. Adapted by Fred Fordham.

This year you get TWO sets of shortlisted books instead of one when you sign up for the Spark! School Book Awards by 28 November. If you still need convincing, here's a fantastic endorsement from a secondary school librarian...

One of the best non fiction titles I’ve read recently was The History of Information by Chris Haughton. It’s an incredible book and a really important one too as it talks about things like propaganda and machine learning. Highly recommend for all ages from 9+. A must for adults too!

I genuinely think we live in a golden age of kids non-fiction, so I’m very excited for us to celebrate #NonFictionNovember with this week’s #KidsBooksFriday.

What brilliant non-fiction would you recommend? This is another week where I can’t possibly stop at four.

I know I'm biased, but Scottish Book Trust really do amazing work. Please support our Christmas campaign by sharing, and/or donating if you can.
Every child deserves the magic of books. ✨📚 But for too many families this winter, books will feel like a luxury they can't afford.

Donate to our Christmas Appeal today to give the magic of books to children and families accessing food banks this festive season. 🎄

A really powerful read about fasting and how it can affect people during Ramadan. I had three children in my class last year attempting to and this book would have been so helpful for them and more importantly others in the class who were trying to understand.

An excellent article. Young teenage boys are incredibly underserved in the current publishing market an Nathanael Lessore’s books are incredibly important in filling that gap, and in allowing boys to see themselves and their lives represented in books in a realistic way.
"The discussions or reflections that books inspire can change lives for the better. I know because I’ve seen it."

Author Nathanael Lessore believes fiction can play a big role in supporting positive attitudes to boyhood and masculinity.

I was a huge Red Dwarf fan so very excited to pick up Sin Bin Island by @dougrdnaylor.bsky.social for the @sparkbookaward.bsky.social #LongList. Despite it being on the chunky side, I have raced through it today - a quirky adventure and full of his trademark wit and imagination. #UKKidLit #KidLitUK

What Halloween related books would you recommend and add to the list?
It's not possible to read all books, so find someone you trust to recommend - @mariannedoherty.bsky.social is so good at recommending
With it being Halloween I guess we need a spooky #KidsBooksFriday. But I am also a total scaredy cat so I’ll be sticking to cosy spooky books thanks. The kids do seem to love a bit of horror though, so do recommend - just don’t expect me to read any! 🙈 👻 #UKKidLit #KidLitUK #KidLit

Seven ghosts and Aveline Jones are top tier horror reads. I’ll miss reading the last two chapters of seven ghosts this year and seeing the jaws drop as they work out the twist! How to make friends with a ghost is a nice friendly spooky read.
