"You're not Viktor. You're a thing I made to replace him. A mistake. And I will not... I will not give myself to you." The creature's breath grew deeper, heavier, as though it were savoring every word. Then, Viktor's voice broke through the tense silence, quiet but laced with something that made Jayce's skin crawl. "I won't be replaced. Not by anyone, Jayce. Not by a bride, or a companion, or a memory. I will be with you on your wedding night. I will be waiting for you."

The Herald's sorrowed face turned toward him. Its voice, when it came, was hushed, yet the hall carried it as though it were spoken by every stone. "This place has not known a living man in many years." The other two muzzles held still — one blank, one smiling — and their stillness felt heavier than any sound. Jayce swallowed. His mouth was dry, his throat raw from the long journey, but the words pushed out anyway, small in the vastness. "It feels..." He hesitated, searching. His gaze slid up the towering pillars, caught on the hovering lanterns. "It feels alive." The smiling muzzle curved, slow and deliberate. "It is." The word landed in him like a weight, resonant as a tolling bell.

Terror and anger collided in him, molten and raw. The hall seemed to tilt; shadows lengthened like claws across the walls. He wanted to strike, to scream, to flee — but every instinct was shackled by horror, by the undeniable truth: this was the result of his own hands, his own genius, his own guilt. The creature’s eyes bore into him, unrelenting. “Do you regret me, Jayce? Or do you only regret that the world will now see what you have wrought?”
