The town of St Helens is just between Liverpool and Manchester. When I was a small child, in Liverpool, Mount St Helens, in Washington, erupted. Not having a grasp of geography, I spent two weeks in mortal fear of dying in a volcanic eruption before my dad set me straight.

More than a century after an Australian soldier wrote a letter to his mother as he sailed to war and his death, it has been discovered in a bottle washed up on a remote beach.

Sky News is platforming a guy who says he's from a Jewish Aston Villa supporters group, but it turns out that the guy a) isn't Jewish, b) the group doesn't exist, and c) he works for the right wing Henry Jackson Society, whose website says he 'specialises in disinformation'. Well, quite.

I was born in and I live in England but have dual citizenship with New Zealand. When I travel I do so on my NZ passport and put on a Kiwi accent as I don't want to be associated with English tourists. I find people treat me better and I get fewer "random" bag searches.

Ray French, the former rugby league commentator, has died at the age of 85. He had been living with dementia.
He played internationally in union, winning four caps in the second row for England in 1961, before moving to league and joining his home town club, St Helens, that year and helped them win the Challenge Cup in 1966. He appeared four times for Great Britain, in 1968. Continue reading...
