My friend @steelydan4prez.bsky.social asked a great question the other week - what's the #1 song for people to name their Grateful Dead cover bands after? Did a little digging, and here's what I found...

Anybody have favorite jam band love songs that aren’t the Dead, Phish, Billy, Panic or Dogs?

Wrote a little bit about Bob Weir, and an element of his musicianship that I’ve always appreciated

Listening to the 56 minute Other One jam that Spafford played the other night. Figured with “56 minute Other One” they’d jam a little before going into the intro of the song. But no, right on it. Good on them

Just heard a Grateful Dead themed subway announcement from Andy Cohen?? He said something about Cornell 77 and worked in “I know you rider.”

Playing Island Tour 2001 to soundcheck some speakers at work. Got a “who is this? This rules” from a coworker and when I said Phish, their face dropped

I’ve said this before, I’m sure. But Weather Report Suite does basically everything I want out of a Grateful Dead song. It’s quiet, it’s loud, it’s dancey, it’s intense, it’s got a weird jam, it’s catchy, and it weaves between all these different worlds

Everybody is sharing music... and I will get to that. But the other thing with Bobby was his wacky sense of humor. So I thought I would post a few interviews and promo things he did with the Dead. They make me laugh. I hope they make you laugh too.

I was born in 1999, so I didn’t get to see Bob perform with the Grateful Dead. But I saw him many times over the years with other bands. One of my favorite moments of seeing Bobby comes from 8/21/21 at Citi Field.

One year ago today I was playing a gig at a bar. And this drunk woman kept yelling “DO FAIRYTALE OF NEW YORK.” Wasn’t planning to do it a few days after Christmas, but a request is a request. My duet partner was like “I don’t know the woman’s part” and I said “it’s okay, I’ll do both”

To summarize: Red Roses Green Gold was okay, Bob Weir's Satchel Paige musical is never going to see the light of day, and the Jerry Garcia Band should've played "Tomorrow" during the Broadway residency
Wrote about the Grateful Dead's history with musical theater, from Bob Weir's Satchel Paige musical to Red Roses Green Gold, and asked- can it really work?
