It is incredible — the blind spots you develop when you’ve never, ever been poor.
Trump claims that food stamps "puts the country in jeopardy. People that are able-bodied can do a job, they leave their job because they figure they can pick this up, it's easier."

For the last 9 years, especially during the Cambridge Analytica/Vote Leave/Russian embassy era, I’ve had my documented criticism of the BBC’s political coverage.

But I still support its mission and its many great journalists, some now finally speaking up against the obvious coup

The former Chairman of the BBC, Richard Sharp, helped secure then-Tory PM Boris Johnson a loan for £800.000.

And still there is a pattern of right-wing attacks on the BBC. Johnson and his top adviser Cummings wanted the BBC destroyed. They did not hide it well.

Trump wants to destroy the BBC and take our money. And Nigel Farage is egging him on.

All true patriots should tell them both: hands off our BBC.

1/ Michael Prescott of Hanover Communications, whose leaked memo alleging left-wing bias led to the BBC meltdown.

You could be forgiven for thinking that a corporate lobbyist & former Murdoch press hack may not have the best interests of public-service broadcasting at heart.

2/ Hanover has been described as expert in media manipulation & covert lobbying.

You could be forgiven for seeing the leaking of Michael Prescott's inflammatory memo as a textbook example of media manipulation (with the full connivance of the Daily Telegraph et al).

3/ It would be interesting to know exactly what role BBC Board member Robbie Gibb played in this affair.

Whoever leaked Michael Prescott's inflammatory & ideologically loaded memo must have known what damage it would do to the BBC.

Cui bono?

Now he's giving ammunition to Trump & the billionaire media barons who aim to destroy the BBC.

6/ Michael Prescott is an old friend of Robbie Gibb & was on the panel to choose the head of Ofcom when Boris Johnson was PM.

Gibb tried to swing it for a Tory apparatchik but was overruled by (of all people) Nadine Dorries, who preferred another.

7/ Why is Trump bothering to intimidate the BBC with the threat of a €1 billion libel suit?

Because the BBC has a very large audience in the US, where it is trusted considerably more than all major US news brands.

Truthful reporting is anathema to autocrats.

Seems likely they realised that the BBC Board was unwilling to defend the BBC, its employees & its values from sustained, ideologically motivated attack. Who'd want to stay on after such a betrayal?
