I thought the DOJ/FBI already investigated and there was nothing there? Bondi & Patel previously said “case closed, move along folks.”

Challenger announced job cuts released early. 153,074 in October, up 175% from Oct 2024, highest for the month since 2003. YTD hiring plans down 35% from last year. Seasonal hiring plans lowest since Challenger began tracking in 2012.

“We see the same trends globally: rule of law abused by those in control, free media silenced, critics imprisoned, and societies pushed towards authoritarian rule and militarisation. In 2024, more elections were held than ever before, but fewer and fewer are free and fair.”

Great piece by @stevevladeck.bsky.social here (his insight on these matters is always appreciated)!

“Until this year, Congress’s 230-year-old choice had been borne out. Presidents of both parties have been especially careful to use the military domestically…”
The federal government does and should have the authority to deploy troops into our cities—even without local consent—*when the circumstances actually warrant it.*

In @nytopinion.nytimes.com, me on why the real issue in Portland, Chicago, and elsewhere is the missing / contrived factual predicate:

Jake Tapper is reporting that the indictment relates to “Arctic Haze” & Dan Richman. @annabower.bsky.social has a great write-up about it here.

While we're all distracted by the domestic sideshow, Trump is sending the military out to kill people he says are "terrorists", in violation of US and international law. No wonder people at the Pentagon are checking in with their lawyers.

This is hands down the best piece of journalism I’ve read regarding the floods in Texas. But warning, it’s absolutely terrifying and heartbreaking.

Thank you Aaron Parsley at @texasmonthly.bsky.social for sharing your harrowing story.

More alarmingly, I’m confident she does know what the right of habeas corpus is, but she’d be 100% okay with the POTUS dictating who is entitled to it. That the leader of our domestic security institution, with enormous power over U.S. citizens, feels comfortable to say this out loud is horrifying.
HASSAN: What is habeas corpus?

NOEM: Habeas corpus is a constitutional right that the president has to be able to remove people from this country

HASSAN: That's incorrect

Bondi claims this is not illegal because it’s “not being given to an individual, but rather to the United States Air Force and, eventually, to the presidential library foundation.”

Absolutely insane to claim that when it’s only able to be used by one POTUS, and then given to his library. $400MM

From today’s “project homecoming” proclamation. Is this setting up the federal government to contract with private mercenary groups (like Eric Prince’s Blackwater) or other militia groups (Proud Boys, etc.)?

The declaration was just unsealed in the SDTX case. Government says it gives detainees 12 hours to make a phone call, 24 hours to file a habeas petition, but also notes there could be “fact-specific exceptional cases.”

Sounds like Bukele chose option 3, and @jvl.bsky.social’s warning feels more like becoming reality.
Basically: I don’t think people understand that 36 hours from now it’s possible that America will have a formalized system for abducting enemies of the regime and stashing them in foreign gulags, indefinitely.

@stevevladeck.bsky.social this is definitely alarming. If you don’t have an X account or are not logged in, then you cannot see the post from NTSB Newsroom (this screenshot is what shows up). So you have to have an X account to see government communications?!
