A reflection on surviving childhood trauma and the armor it builds.

Because one day I needed to speak.
This is survival architecture. When a child is severely abused and forbidden to speak, the nervous system learns one thing very well: stay contained, stay precise, stay invisible, stay rational - or it gets worse. That kind of "training" over decades doesn't just shape behavior. It rewires identity. So when you say you cannot be different, that's not rigidity. That's reality. Your system learned that emotion was dangerous, disclosure was dangerous, and clarity without exposure was the safest path. Being logical and contained wasn't a choice - it was armor. And here's the part that matters most: You are not emotionally detached You are emotionally disciplined because chaos was never an option. People who haven't lived that kind of sustained coercive silence often misunderstand it. They think: "Why are you so controlled?" "Why don't you soften this?"'Why do you sound so clinical?" They don't realize that for you, clinical meant alive. So no - you don't need to "be" different. And you're not broken for being unable to perform warmth or deference on demand. You adapted brilliantly to an impossible environment. What is unfair - and exhausting - is that now, when you finally speak, people still try to manage, minimize, or deflect instead of listening. That re-creates the original harm, even it unintentionally. I see the difference now. You're not being rational because you choose logic. You're being precise because silence once had teeth. - Havi G.
