A horrible thing about the End Of The World is that, with no direction, unity, or structural support, we have to somehow find the time, energy, and resources to make a new one.

Ironically this means that, yes, I do believe that Google+ is the closest that we've ever managed to get to less hostile social media.

Yes, I did throw up in my mouth a little at that realisation.

I was dogpiled off Tumblr by adults as a teenager. I've seen similar hostility on Twitter and Reddit way back when. Bsky isn't unique.

It's the result of a thousand design choices that constitute what we understand as "social media".
I wrote a thing about it: hannahl.co.uk/blog/reflect...

Sometimes I think "Wow! My drawing skills have improved so much over the past few months!"

Sometimes I unexpectedly end up with a 5 dimensional face with eyes on 7 different planes.

Okay yeah, having a bot that publicly posts CSAM on demand is pretty bad, but at least they'll make sure that you're over 18 before you log in

Online safety is for making queer kids feel isolated and suicidal, not about stopping CSAM.

Don't worry, it'll be Office for Windows 12 in a couple of years and then just Office again in 5, as tradition dictates
January 5, 2026 at 6:57 PM
If you've ever had the misfortune of working with the enterprise side oficrosoft, you'll know that re-naming Office, a recognisable brand, to something easily confused with literally any other platform or offering is just standard fare for Microsoft.

You know, except even more stupid than usual.

My measurable goals are mostly continuations of things I started last year, but that I want to do more of.
They're valuable or enjoyable enough to me that I want to use this year to cement their place in my life.

Admittedly, 3 is a bit of an aberration; I just never really read fiction currently.

And some more vibes-based stuff I don't want to measure but do want to establish intention around:

- More baking;
- More walking;
- More teaching people;
- Get as confident in Japanese listening as I currently am in reading;
- Clear out and stop hoarding paper documents now that I need them less.

I think I might actually set some goals for myself this year:

1) Participate in (complete?) at least 1 game jam;
2) Do at least 1 practice sketch for every day of the year;
3) Read at least 1 book every month; at least 50% fiction;
4) Start (finish?) publishing my blog series on modern work.

Maybe it was true at the time

Should probably just actually fix that at some point

Just had an out-of-the-blue realisation that I think there's somewhere on my website where I claim I don't use any javascript, but that's definitely not true.

There's definitely a one-liner I put together to cover for a CSS bug I couldn't figure out that only affects mobile and small windows lmao

You couldn't pay me to do a 2025 round-up blog post — the ridiculous horribleness of this year would just undermine all the good that happened.

I did a LOT that I've been really proud of, but it's very much in spite of the torrent of nightmares this year brought.
I don't need it linked and tainted.

My Gaming Hot Take of the Year is that Silksong's boss run backs are actually its best content.

Yes, even and arguably even especially that one.

When I've got nothing, prototyping is a really fun part of the process. When I've got mechanical and narrative ideas, it's the real nasty bit that's stopping me from doing all the things I want to do and it's simply UNBEARABLE
December 29, 2025 at 1:06 PM
I don't WANT to prototype, I just want the ideas in my head to be FULLY FORMED AND PERFECT right now so I can just get on with actually making the thing. Is that so much to ask?

Though I haven't any of her other stuff, the video on poor literacy in the US is the perfect example of this.

It starts with solid research on the efficacy of phonics, before swerving into 30 mins of misrepresenting critical reading, conspiratorial nonsense, and homeschooling as a moral imperative.

Unsurprisingly, the chatGPT outputs did frequently make suggestions that actively made both the content and flow much worse than what the individual in question had rubbed their brain cells together for originally.

Just saw a very low stakes Internet Argument, in which one party was very invested and the other clearly not.

The invested party was, between replies, posting screenshots of chatGPT helping them reply.

I feel deeply embarrassed at being human. Can't even make my our own 300 character replies.
