My all-time favorite albums as of 2024. I update it more or less annually, since some albums rise into or fall out of favor.
Take care of yourself.

Finally watched my first Werner Herzog documentary and it's very easy to see why he garnered such fame, and it's not just because of his idiosyncratic voice and language. Even just the first 5 minutes of Into the Abyss are destructively effective.

F.W. Murnau did not need to go this hard for the opening shots of a movie that has most of its runtime taken up by a very unexciting love story, but I'm glad no one told him that.

Also vibin with Bill Orcutt's How to Rescue Things. While not explicitly a Christmas album, the bitterness of Orcutt's sharp and soulful guitar is deliciously contrasted with orchestral easy listening samples, evoking the passionate flames of a fireplace on a dark winter's night.

Vibin with Heinali and Andriana-Yaroslava Saienko's "Hildegard", a reinterpretation of liturgical hymns by way of Ukranian folk singing and modular synth drones. Quite good with headphones, but really shines when it's allowed to fill a physical space via speakers. Powerful.

Let the people you love know that you love them, even if they already know. In this age of atomization, it's more important than ever to cherish the human connections we do have, and share the compassion we can.

Merry Christmas, take care of yourself, and happy holidays.

Unfortunately, we have to delay Layer 8: FRAUD to early next year. We underestimated the workload of our very ambitious plans, so we had to either compromise on the vision or delay it, and we want to make sure the last stretch is the best it can be.

Thank you for your patience.

Happy 25th birthday to Flood by Boris, arguably my favorite album of all time! A slow-burn journey through a serene sunlit surface, the crashing waves that shatter it and the sunken depths below it. Immaculate immersive atmosphere, still powerful after over a decade of listening.

It's so wild that The Protomen Act III just... exists now. I waited for this album for 14 years... It does feel tonally mismatched with the story due to the much "funner" sound, but it's a collection are very intricately constructed, satisfying bangers.

Vibin with Wrekmeister Harmonies' Flowers in the Spring. Each track focuses on a single idea repeated for double-digit minutes, which makes it niche, but also my favorite drone metal album in a while. Its repetition is comforting, its atmosphere cathartic, its mood bottomless.

After a comedy of errors leading to 7 months of transit and delays, I finally got my hands on the vinyl of Swans' latest album, Birthing, and even after multiple attempts I can't help but to be underwhelmed, especially right after Live Rope, one of the best live albums ever.

Despite being constantly busy with you-know-what, I still found enough free time for 10 more Piranesi. pieces. A lo-fi trilogy, a Mario 64 soundfont black metal epic, some of the darkest soundscapes so far and a noisey krautrock jam.

I'm surprised After Hours doesn't come up more often in conversations about Scorsese's films, that movie's a blast. Made me laugh out loud many times despite watching it alone, which is even once is already pretty rare.

Don't know all what happened with the break up of Black Dresses but Ada Rook's solo album from earlier this year is a ton of fun. A couple misses but the hits that are there hit extremely hard.

Really enjoyed Flummox's Southern Progress. Cheesy, quirky, high energy progressive metal. Throwback-y to the golden age of alt metal without feeling dated. Eclectic, sometimes surprisingly affecting, always very queer.

RIP Tatsuya Nakadai, the greatest Japanese actor of all time. I always get excited when I see his name in opening credits. He was incredible in Harakiri and The Human Condition trilogy, but my favorite performance of his still has to be The Beast Shall Die (1959). Wild eyes.
