Flying back to #Singapore at night is quite a sight when the plane flies over the ships at anchor south of the island. It really impresses on the observer how important shipping and trade is to this small island.

Some cities are occupied.
Others are learned.
This is about the moment a place stops being provisional. When belonging is no longer argued, only assumed. When staying becomes ordinary, and therefore permanent.

This is my 50th essay.

This old video of 1980s Chinatown in #Singapore is quite an eye opener. Things were very different then and most of the ppl spoke Cantonese, which is rare now as Mandarin has taken over.

Periodic reminder that because Hong Kong, Taiwan and (other) diasporic Chinese communities (in Malaysia, Singapore, etc.) did not suffer through the Cultural Revolution, they have kept up cultural traditions and practices. Unlike the Mainland Chinese.
Destroying Hong Kong’s unique cultural heritage piece by piece.

‘Amid looming redevelopment, Lo Yuet-ping moved out of Cha Kwo Ling Village months ago. However, the 73-year-old is still trying to ensure the future of the kirin dance team – a symbol of the historic village’s unique Hakka heritage’.

There are two Singapores.

One requires a reservation and a small emotional loan.
The other wears a black T-shirt, eats breakfast for under five dollars, and knows exactly where the good curry puffs are.

I am increasingly loyal to the second one.

If China takes Taiwan and US can no longer act as a counterweight to China, China will create a sphere of influence in Asia in its image, and Asian countries will lose their autonomy. This is why it's so important to prevent Taiwan's fall, and guard against China's expansionism.

The 2024 HK film "The Last Dance" (破·地獄) that created a huge impact featured a song in the traditional Cantonese "southern tune" (南音) style. I'm unfamiliar with the genre, but it triggered a lost childhood memory of hearing a song in the same style on TV. After months of searching, I found it today.

My mom often sang a few lines of this very old Cantonese song (her happy song) but I’ve never heard it as a complete song until chancing on it today.

邊個話我傻 (who called me foolish) from 1936 was sung by 大傻 (Big Fool), a name that always tickled my mom.
