Rereading The Hobbit with Gabriel and forgotten how menacing and evil Gollum is in that book with only a hint of the pathetic and tragic that is his portrayal in the trilogy.

I need to make a definitive list of my favorite failures. Failed tv shows, disastrous amusement parks, botched stores, terrible restaurants, awful snacks and sodas, unwatchable movies, and failed major label releases etc, I just get really interested when something just doesn’t work.

I’ve said it before but the only strategic reason anyone would want Greenland is because they deeply believe the most dire predictions of global warming.

This and the Dead Dog’s Eyeball tribute were my intro to Johnston, but for some reason this ended up on the sell pile in the early 00’s(by that point I had a lot of tapes). So I grabbed a new copy and wondering why I got rid of it!

Who saw the Chevy Chase Show filmed in the Chevy Chase theater in its ill fated month and a half run? I think I only saw clips on other shows (I remember the Daily Show saying “Somewhere through a haze of painkillers Chevy Chase is smiling”) making fun of it.

I see The Bottom of the Hill is closing down. I only went there twice when I lived in California but they were two of the greatest shows I’ve ever seen. Arab on Radar and Pink and Brown and then Aislers Set and The Gossip.

I thought “Chevy Chase is an asshole” was one of the immutable truths of the universe but apparently some people are just learning this, but anyway I recently rewatched Fletch and you know, it mostly held up.

Maduro was basically Hugo Chávez without the charisma but he got the job because he was the vice president, so now they’ve removed him but the plan is to leave his vice president in charge?

From the Times about Cilia Adela Flores de Maduro: “She helped consolidate his rule while controlling the judiciary and amassing wealth through corruption, experts say.” Hmm sounds familiar maybe the experts can point out another world leader that could be described similarly.

It’s typical of a president who’s domestic policy is flopping to move mainly to foreign policy because American solipsism constantly ignores the destructive rot we’ve allowed that to become (or remain).
