A recommendation for the sickos who vibe with slow, atmospheric nonsense, full of imagery that evokes Lovecraft (by way of Fulci and Rollin).

DARK WATERS (1993) is full of the blasphemous gothic, slumbering ancient gods, moldering tombs, desolate cliffsides as the scene of monstrous rituals, etc

Horror is one of the oldest roleplaying game genres. Spearheaded by the success of the Call of Cthulhu game, it’s been a steady presence in the hobby for a long time. But, as with all things, people try to bandwagon it and put horror into games where the mechanics aren’t necessarily the strongest to support it. Fortunately, there are some workarounds we can use as GMs.

Thinking about this AD&D chart by Ed Greenwood from his dragon magazine article Modern Monsters (issue 57). I saw it years ago but the damage die per speed of impact bit has captured my imagination for a while. I never truly considered ramming an elf with a 80 mph pickup truck before that moment.

GM Tip:
Narrate failures through the competence of the PCs against a hazardous world.

They're a skilled thief, but the trap is rusted.
They have a glib tongue, but the guard is already being coerced.
They're strong, but even a giant couldn't lift this portcullis.
