As a teen I spoke good English, so a journalist friend brought me to interview metal bands and (more often) to see shows. Mixed experiences (it was peak nu metal) but mostly great conversations, harmless approaches, respectful moshpits. Overwhelmingly I have experienced metal dudes as decent folks.
Heavy-metal concerts aren’t typically bastions of progressivism—but in the mosh pit, a savage empathy abides, James Parker reports: theatln.tc/2Re1ymKu

I would not be an academic if I had not followed an English language BA in International Economics in my hometown of Milan. Studying economics among a multitude of nationalities allowed me to grow as a researcher.
Utrecht University abolishes its English language bachelor's program in economics and replaces it with a Dutch one.

They told staff (~30% international) the week before Christmas. Layoffs seem likely now. Unwarranted lobotomy is the only word I can find for it...

A more useful question would be: is doing tasks within a given time ALSO something we want to test, or a skill we want to develop? If so, accommodations should be few if any. If not, we need better testing.

I am a bit skeptical of the rise of student detachment (personally I felt there was a peak of distance after Covid, and then a partial return) BUT this is one possible consequence of broad LLM availability. What I have noticed is one rather silly effect: lately, my students are particularly nervous.
An issue we're seeing at all levels of university is that many students are simply refusing to do *anything*. They aren't reading the syllabus, aren't following assignment guidelines, aren't engaging with material, ignoring deadlines. And this might seem like old news, but it truly has ramped up.

As the only non-American in my household, I am definitely the one who is most irrationally attached to thanksgiving dinner. Not thanksgiving per se - it is not my culture after all. Just dinner.

Thanks to NWO that will fund one year of research into whether romantic polarization is making Gen Z’s love life a bit more interesting. Sometimes it works, friends.
A bunch more interesting projects funded here: www.nwo.nl/nieuws/van-s...

My main response to the Vulture article, other than nausea, is remembering how when I was an impromptu interpreter in the 00s, my parasocial idol - writer Joe Lansdale - was kind, impeccable about boundaries, and exactly the person I thought he’d be. I think that’s still true for most people.
