Keep in mind before moving here, immigrants are very much not considered part of Germany society, but you should be grateful to live among them:

Saw this today, walking around in public like it’s no big deal. It’s “1933” in case it’s not super clear.

If you’re from the US it’s hard to comprehend all off the small ways that Americans are way more accommodating of people from other cultures in comparison to Europeans.

During the Ta-Nehisi podcast you said most Americans hold fundamentally wrong moral views on trans people. Can you provide substantial evidence for that? Only 10% of Americans are against anti-trans discrimination laws (64% in favor).

Americans’ Complex Views on Gender Identity and Transgender Issues
Most favor protecting trans people from discrimination, but fewer support policies related to medical care for gender transitions; many are uneasy with the pace of change on trans issues.

Going to HBF (train station). It’s literally four stops. Elevator to the platform doesn’t work, ~2-3 flights that would be impossible for a disabled person. Then the train has all the cars backwards. So it’s a violent madhouse getting on the train. Even the most trivial trip cannot go smoothly.

Need a doc photo. New system says you need “approved” places. Supposedly machines at the departments, but email says don’t rely (no electronic system from the government is at all reliable). No central site listing what’s “approved.” Photo store closed 45 mins early. Nothing can be done competently.

1.5 hrs waiting for bag after intl flight. Other flights emptied our carousel. 25 ppl in line, 1 agent. After 15 mins: “From [flight]?” Yes — baggage handlers miscommunicated. Happens all the time — everything borderline understaffed on purpose, no system is robust at all.

Robustness is wasteful.

Germany’s approach to free speech requires *proof* of any and all critical statements. Consequently, it’s easy for businesses to silence critics. Wire card is a famous example of this, but here we have a German restaurant silencing someone who had worms in their food.

New law in Berlin well allows police to search anyone on subway at any time without any reason.

On German startup culture:

“I’m trying to keep an open mind, but right now the whole thing feels more like a well-dressed bubble than a genuinely innovation-driven ecosystem.”

It’s like a parallel for the entirety of the European economy .

I’ve skipped like 10 of these kinds of posts, but let’s do another.

If you move to Germany, be aware: the culture isn’t friendly. The idea that people might show a bit of kindness to someone in an uncomfortable new place doesn’t really exist here.
Is something wrong with me?

It’s crazy how much Germany hates it when people try to be productive or build things.

German Govt website :
>Scan and upload these 5 docs
Me: ok
>You can only upload 3 files
Me: okay I’ll just make it into one big pdf
>each file has to be less than 10MB
Me: okay I’ll just make it into three files all containing one or two docs
> the total of all the files cannot be more than 16MB

Saw this at a restaurant today. It’s a nice change and totally necessary since Germans like to do this thing where they stay after their meal at a busy restaurant for two hours smoking cigarettes and not ordering anything.

Me: it would be nice to have more space in our apartment here in Germany.

German: bah, everything is so big and ridiculous with you Americans.

Me: I was thinking about buying an ironing board, instead of ironing on the floor

GR: where would possibly put it?! Do you think we live in a warehouse?!

You say people are demotivated because of the lack of righteousness that the Dems had before the election. People are sick of it. We’re finally driving out of the wildfire and you want to turn around.

More Democrats Favor Party Moderation Than in Past
A 45% plurality of Democrats say they would like their party to become more moderate, while a similar 43% plurality of Republicans prefer that their party maintain its current ideological bent.
