Joe Roberts stayed for five months with the Trivedi family in Bangalore, while travelling all over southern India.  In Pondicherry he found Rita, a melancholic divorcee banished to an ashram. He ...

Another really good piece & a useful counterweight to the (IMO) overdone idea that 'TACO' or, linked, that Trump is just a skilled negotiator who makes maximalist demands as a tactic, then settles for something less so that the other party thinks they have got off lightly.

I have been disappointed by Keir Starmer since a few weeks after the 2024 election. But his abject failure to show any backbone in the face of Trump's illegal actions in Venezuela is beyond disappointment. It is contemptible.

Perhaps giving the Nobel Peace Prize to Mrs Machado wasn't a terribly good idea ...

Gently they go, the beautiful, the tender, the kind;
Quietly they go, the intelligent, the witty, the brave.
I know. But I do not approve. And I am not resigned.

The tree arrived on Friday, but it's taken until today to finish putting up all the decorations. All quite twinkly chez nous now though.

Honestly, the press framing of tax is just so gross. These headlines could be: thousands of kids lifted out of poverty; £2m houses taxed more fairly; taxes raised to support hospitals and schools and other good things

So you should really watch this. Just 2 minutes. But a window into the truly radical nature of the people Trump is nominating.

When pressed today, the nominee to be Ambassador to South Africa refuses to oppose reinstituting laws to prevent black people from voting in America.
