You guys...? We did it. 🥰

We won the FULL NEW YORK STATE DEATH INDEX FOR 1880-2017!

We beat the largest government agency in the state of New York (@nysdoh.bsky.social), in the highest court of the state, through a Freedom of Information Law (#FOIL) suit.

It was great to hear such a positive response about the issues brought forward, especially to furthering digitization efforts and access!
APG board member & advocacy chair Alec Ferretti testified in front of the New York State Legislature yesterday in opposition to proposed budget changes that would negatively impact access to NY vital records. View the testimony at https://nystateassembly.granicus.com/player/clip/8827 (at 8:58:36).

Our board member Alec Ferretti should be testifying sometime in the next hour. (Technically, he'll do it wearing one of his many other hats: as a board member of the Association of Professional Genealogists @apgenealogists.bsky.social).

Also testifying right after him: Josh Taylor of the NYG&B!

I recently saw The Breakthrough on Netflix, a mini-series about a double-murder in Sweden which was solved using Investigative Genetic Genealogy. I made a review video discussing what they got right, what they got wrong, and breaking down some of the information in more depth. youtu.be/mKL215bfBGc

If you were suddenly transported back 100 years to 1925, how far would you have to travel to find your closest ancestor?

In 1925, I had 16 ancestors who were alive. My closest ancestors would be about 450 miles/724km away in Philadelphia, PA, where my grandfather Simon lived.

Mine may actually be @tastinghistory.bsky.social at a distance of 19th cousin 5x removed. @iammrbeat.bsky.social was pretty close at 19th cousin 3x removed.
Who is the most distant relative you've ever met where you actually know exactly how you are related?

I finally saw The Breakthrough and enjoyed it quite a lot! There were some glaring errors related to the Investigative Genetic #Genealogy, but overall a lot of detail that showed there was some serious research into genealogical methods.

I'm considering a video about what they got right and wrong.
