Do you believe in miracles? I do.  They found each other!  Several weeks ago, when @jayceebrill reached out to Humans of Judaism for help locating her grandmother’s long-lost friend from the Holocaust, we posted the following plea for help: “This is my 90 year old grandmother, Henriette Glazer. She is a Holocaust survivor who has been trying for decades to find her best friend, whom she met in an orphanage in Caldas de Malavella, Spain. Her name is Bella and they tried to stay in touch but ultimately lost contact. My grandmother was around 6, so we assume Bella was 8-10. Here is a picture of the orphanage. My grandmother is in the black coat and Bella is wearing white with striped socks and a bow. Are you able to help?” Well, lucky for Jaycee, the post was viewed by genealogist Dr. Adina Newman @myfamilygenie, who also runs the Holocaust Reunion Project. And a reunion it was! She was able to track down Bella and connect the old friends, first via FaceTime, and in a few months, they will be meeting in person.  We’re so grateful to everyone who shared their story and helped bring these women back together. Here’s a glimpse of their first FaceTime call, after nearly a lifetime apart.

This is child survivor Vilunya Diskin (one of the co-authors of "Our Bodies, Ourselves,") and her granddaughter meeting the granddaughter of Anna Ikawy, the woman who hid Vilunya during the Holocaust. Until September, Vilunya had no idea who her own parents were or how she'd been rescued. 1/2

We recently began a consult with the child of two Holocaust survivors who did not even know the names of any of her grandparents.

Because this is what the Holocaust did: not only did people lose their family members, they lost access to their family history as well. 1/2

If you've ever been curious why we do what we do, it's right here.👇🏼
The power of DNA.
I've just discovered that my dad has a half 2nd cousin, a Holocaust survivor who thought she had no Diamond/Diment cousins alive. Here's how I reconnected her to many cousins--and share a photo of the father she can barely remember:

Inquiry received, January 9, 2025 10:40 pm:
"I am looking for the first name and fate of my aunt..."

Name of said aunt found on documents and sent, January 10, 2025 8:30 am.

Not every case is this straightforward, but so many Holocaust survivors simply don't realize this information is knowable.

In other happy reunion news, here's the first meeting between Vilunya Diskin, an orphaned child survivor of the Holocaust (and one of the co-authors of "Our Bodies, Ourselves") and the granddaughter of the woman who hid her in her home. Facilitated by @holocaustreunions.bsky.social. Just incredible.

We're honored that the incredible story of Vilunya Diskin graces the front page of today's @bostonglobe.com.

Our project used a combination of DNA and paper records to give Vilunya back her identity and connect her both with living relatives and to the family that rescued her.

We were so honored to work with Vilunya, a hidden child of the Holocaust, to give her back her identity and her story.

Her extraordinary case illustrates the incredible power of DNA to solve even the most intractable genealogical mysteries and bring peace and closure to survivors.

We strive to bring light into the lives of those whose family histories were shattered.

As you celebrate Hanukkah, may the light of the candles remind us all of strength, endurance, hope, and the unbreakable bonds of family.

Wishing you and your loved ones a joyous and meaningful Hanukkah.

So I have an extraordinary story for you.

Vilunya Diskin is an 83-year-old retired women’s health advocate best known as a co-author of the iconic book "Our Bodies, Ourselves." She is also a Holocaust orphan who was hidden in a gentile home in Poland during the war and later adopted. 1/9
