If you had ancestors who lived anywhere in Europe, here's a resource that might help you find info--including photos and genealogical info. I found cases with photos for relatives who were later killed in the Holocaust!

Researching 1926 Poland (parts of modern-day Ukraine and Lithuania, modern-day Poland and bits of what was Russian Empire, Galicia, Czechoslovakia, East Prussia among others)? Great resource I’ve mentioned b4, now more searchable!

Don't get too attached to how a surname--or given name--was spelled, or you may miss docs that reference actual family members. Spelling of names wasn't important to our ancestors. Two copies of the same record demonstrate this:

If your family lived in what became the #USSR, they/their family members were likely impacted, may have been arrested &/or executed. A site is consolidating sites w/“repressed" individuals. I found photos, court docs, more for my relatives

Eastern European newspapers can help flesh out the lives of your relatives. Here's site I used and some of what I found on my own family. With newspapers in Russian, Yiddish, Polish and more, this is a great resource.

Looks like @reclaimtherecords.org had to fight to reclaim their name. Follow them on their actual account to see how they score records for us all!
They say imitation is the highest form of flattery. So we're like super-flattered right now!

But as you can see, our shiny new BlueSky account name is @reclaimtherecords.org -- meaning it's verified with our long-time domain name and our DNS records.

Relatives not US citizens in 1940 (or some who were but weren't sure themselves), you need to check out AR-2s, newly available from NARA. You may get maiden names, arrival info, signatures+more. And you get them quickly!
