I used to do similar in The Turf in Wrexham; you could feather the coin tray on the table nearest the gents, so you got one of your 10ps back. The pool tables and jukebox only took old 10ps, so all I got was free pool or free jukebox. This worked until 1995; new 10ps came out in 1992.
My old local used to have a pool table that was rigged to not require money to play. When 'outsiders' would come in and place their 50ps down to claim the next game I'd offer to press the button and set it up. Always kept the coins and would buy some bacon fries
