I see more and more #EVs in Johannesburg. I have spotted a few BYDs, the charging stations at my local shopping mall are more often than not busy with cars charging and just this morning there were 3 Vapour Grey #EX30 (mine included) stopped next to each other at a traffic light in Houghton.

This is quite an insightful read if you use dbt: www.getdbt.com/blog/dbt-lab.... SDF's compiler tool chain surely has interesting properties
dbt Labs acquires SDF Labs to accelerate the dbt developer experience | dbt Labs
New tech will significantly improve performance, enhance developer ergonomics, and bring rich new metadata to dbt.

It’s back to work week in Joburg. Traffic is going to get worse and the roads near me are filled with potholes. Many traffic lights are out of order because of rain damage.

As someone who works in tech, I am finding Harari’s Nexus book to be quite insightful. I am not a big fan of Gen AI for everything, but he brings very interesting points about AI that I was not aware of. Guard rails are so crucial

Time to wrap up with work for 2024. Looking back, we did quite cool things in my team. Personally did a lot of internal presentations at John Lewis, presented at one conference in Cape Town and a Meetup in Joburg. Lots of SQL, dbt, Python, Airflow and Tableau to keep me busy #dataengineering

We are stuck in Mauritius for a little bit longer courtesy of the refuelling issues at OR Tambo back in Joburg.

I’ve made the crucial mistake of going to Sandton City while the Black Fridays specials are still on and people just got paid. I was there early and so was the entire province. It was sooooo busy. Never seen so many people on my life.

With a warm climate and relaxed driving you can get quite far on a full charge. Here is my EV at 90% charge. People worry range as if they drive Joburg to Durban everyday. Some do but most don’t. Most daily trips are much shorter than that.

South Africa has very high solar pv power potential. Yesterday my panels were blasting just under 6kWp. So I am glad to see things like this happening: mybroadband.co.za/news/motorin... #ev #ex30 I also like the pic of the cute Volvo wrapped in the Sweedish flag.

I have now driven my EV (Volvo #ex30) for over 4000 kms. All my recharges so far have been solar powered (home, Morningside shopping centre, Sun City resort). And all my charging away from home has been free.

dbt incremental models can be quite useful for optimisation. However, time-based incremental models can cause hard to debug issues when data arrives late or in an incorrect order. More often than not, I recommend full refresh models as they are quite a bit more predictable #dataengineering #dbt
