‘… flourishing together is the central concept around which any community, school, team, or classroom should be built.’

Something remarkable has happened in maths education in England. Now the highest performing country outside of East Asia. A massive joint effort from so many, including a whole load of amazing teachers and leaders of maths! 🤩
Further evidence of England's improvement in maths today with the release of the TIMSS 2023 test which allows for comparisons across countries.

Particularly good news at year 9 (13 year olds) where we've seen a decent jump despite the pandemic (unlike other countries).

Something positive is happening in maths education in England. @ncetm.bsky.social Director of Secondary, Carol Knights, talked to secondary school leaders yesterday, about how to ensure the conditions in schools might support teaching for mastery.

Trust leaders who joined us at our national community will be interested in this. We heard @alisonpeacock.bsky.social reflect on how we can enable maths teacher professionalism to flourish. Together we considered the balance of prescription and autonomy. @ncetm.bsky.social
How much prescription of teaching is too much?

A DfE advisor recently said teachers were being 'enslaved' to centralised prescription, and one academic says successful teaching depends on 'rule breaking'.

But David Robson finds a nuanced picture...

Across the world, teachers are increasingly being told how to teach and some claim that is having a negative impact on pupils. But, asks David Robson, where actually is the sweet spot of teacher auton...

Absolutely this! We have ten years of system leadership learning from the Maths Hubs Programme ready to share. Highly ethical leadership.
Thanks @jonsevers.bsky.social for this. Big thanks @jonnyuttley.bsky.social for insight into the important aspect of the speech. Political leadership that says a competitive rather than collaborative model ends now is a great start, but needs careful system design. Teachers and leaders are ready.
"That chase for a narrow shadow of excellence... that only succeeds by pushing problems on to others - that ends now"
