When I say I hope to have my affairs in order before I die, I mean have a slew of absolute sick burns ready to publish on the death of terrible men who outlive me.
A Sharon Begley byline, almost 5 years after her death.
Upon hearing the news James Watson had died, a STAT reporter said in our Slack, "I wish I could read what Sharon would have written."
Incredible news: Sharon in fact did pre-write a Watson obit. And it is masterful and excoriating.

Rory Best appeared in court the day Paddy Jackson's victim gave her evidence. He said lawyers asked for him to be there, he lied and had to pay substantial damages to the lawfirm. He was Ireland captain at the time. He was a character witness for Jackson.

We already had a referendum to make it easier to get on the ballot! Lowering the age limit for a candidate from 35 to 21! It was rejected! That was only ten years ago! Are we all going crazy?!

I wonder will Catherine Connollys landslide show politicians that there's no massive constituency for fox hunting or IFA style agriculture
(it won't and we will still be forced to have policies made for an incredibly small amount of landowners)

Not just presidential elections - general elections too. 141 other countries allow non-resident citizen voting and it works just fine. Time to extend the same rights to Irish citizens.
Ireland may be voting for a new president today, but Irish citizens who have moved abroad can't cast a ballot.
Writing from Canada, Cáit Caden argues that Irish people abroad should be able to vote, especially in presidential elections.

Irish people abroad should be able to vote, especially in presidential elections due to the significance of the role for international relations, writes Cáit Caden.

I said this before on the Other Place but the idea that politicians have to pander to a barbaric eegit who lives in the countryside, doesn’t understand big words and is hungry for savagery is…….INTERESTING!

“Rural pursuits” consist of the following: being cold indoors, having a preference about how turf is stacked, being nosey and having no public transport. Rural pursuits do not include galloping a pony across a farmer’s land in the wet and cold with the intention of having a dog kill a fox

The State keeps the level of pay so low by not requiring ANY standards or certification of interpreters (except for ISL).
The Court Service pays €40/hour for interpreting and I cannot stress enough how poor that money is for the level of skill involved and the high stakes. Also the right to interpretation is a basic requirement of the right to a fair trial.

I don’t think that speaking Irish should be a prerequisite for being the president? Like yes it’s very nice and a benefit. But language learning is a privilege denied to many. And I think you can very quickly get into what it means to be Irish and who is excluded from that.
