Happy to see this out in early view in Evolution! We tested the roles of signaling and camouflage in the evolution of iris color in Tyranni songbirds. Our findings suggest that bright irises are social/sexual signals mostly associated with species less vulnerable to predation

Evaluating the roles of signaling and camouflage in the evolution of iris color in Tyranni passerines

So thrilled to have captured this image of iridescence on the wings of these 2 Swallows. It's tricky enough photographing these birds in flight but positioning yourself in relation to the sun a certain way can produce stunning results...

I'm a little late to post about this, but I'm happy to see this paper out!

We found in ovenbirds that the color and size of their beaks, the color of their legs, plumage color and body size evolve together in relation to environmental temperature:

Macroevolution of body extremities reveals an integrated phenotypic response of coloration and morphology to temperature in a large clade of Neotropical passerines (Furnariida)
ABSTRACT. Endotherms show smaller extremities (Allen’s rule) and larger body sizes (Bergmann’s rule) in colder climates, thereby reducing heat loss. Colora
