‘We’ve done it before’: how not to lose hope in the fight against ecological disaster
Some days it can feel as if climate catastrophe is inevitable. But history is full of cases – such as the banning of whaling and CFCs – that show humanity can come together to avert disaster

After an ∞ number of litres filtered and an ∞ number of podcast hours listened to, it's time to say tìoraidh to Èirisgeidh and tìoraidh to this years field season! Really lucky I got the good weather and a stellar crew to help me out with my sample collecting. Now it's time to rest 😌

Again I ask: how did we go from half of parliament and all of the press up in arms denouncing racism as a weapon to hound out the left, to the PM giving Enoch Powell speeches and fascists running riot in the street without a word of criticism from the main parties, and active support in some cases.

Sunburnt and questionable fashion can be forgiven for doing seagrass/mileanach surveying in such a gorgeous location. Also an excellent place to practice my gàidhlig. Tha latha math ann! #gàidhlig #hebrides #hebrideanislands #alba #seagrass #fieldwork #mileanach

Introducing our 2nd newborn bottlenose calf of the 2025 season with her proud mum "Barbi" (ID#253)! 🐬

This new youngster (5th known calf for Barbi), was probably only hours old when we met her yesterday, as evidenced from its bent-over dorsal fin and uncoordinated surfacing behaviour. 🧪

I’m petrified about today’s science news. Genetically modifying crabs to have cheetah genes? This could go sideways fast.

I don’t think enough of us talked about the footage of the Norwegian Orcas makin’ out yesterday.

Orcas filmed making out in the wild for first time
Footage captures a pair of orcas nibbling each other's tongues in the Kvænangen fjords in northern Norway. Scientists think this rarely seen behavior could play a role in social bonding.

Got to hang out with a bunch of cool people from Biota Trace testing out an automated sampler (lovingly known as my wee robot pal) to collect water samples from Loch Craignish. @seawilding.bsky.social were also kind enough to let us use their shed and kept us company 😁 🐟 🤖

Here to share some propaganda about doing fieldwork in Scotland. It's definitely always this sunny and dry all the time. No sideways rain, EVER. The rainbow was NOT a paid actor.

All in all, it was a successful first mini PhD project collecting samples for eDNA. Big love to my wonderful helpers 💛💙💜
