When staying with birders it's only natural you join them for a night of owl ringing.

This beautiful young male barn owl behaved very nicely whilst we ringed, weighed and measured him.

🧬 We are so back 🧬

Let's see what these Sound of Barra samples are saying 🫧

Some residents mentioned seeing some seahorses in the seagrass so fingers crossed we pick some up!

A wee peek at some of the members of the #ScottishSeagrassCollaboration group. Nice to put faces to names. I look forward to working with you all! 🌱🧬🐟

Stopped by @projectseagrass.bsky.social nursery hearing about the success and failures of restoration. I also got to indulge in a bit of culture visiting Dylan Thomas's boathouse. I feel the poem "Do not go gentle into that good night..." feels apt in my feelings against apathy in conservation.

A very successful #SeagrassSymposium25 last week rounding off the conference with some insights from future #marine scientists who talked about class and financial issues as ecology students. Howard Wood gave an inspiring talk on his work building #COAST in Arran and the power of being stubborn!

Also got to see University of Aberdeen alumni, Ethan Ross, talk about his PhD project where he catalogued new COI barcodes for a number of inverts found in Scottish seagrass beds. V cool!! 😎🦐🐌🌱

Day 1 of the UK Seagrass Symposium done ✅
Great talks and a great chance to catch up with the seagrass crew across the country. Inspiring messages from J Brooke Landry showing us the Chesapeake playbook.

After an ∞ number of litres filtered and an ∞ number of podcast hours listened to, it's time to say tìoraidh to Èirisgeidh and tìoraidh to this years field season! Really lucky I got the good weather and a stellar crew to help me out with my sample collecting. Now it's time to rest 😌

How it feels to be the only person in the monitoring team to get seasick.

Sunburnt and questionable fashion can be forgiven for doing seagrass/mileanach surveying in such a gorgeous location. Also an excellent place to practice my gàidhlig. Tha latha math ann! #gàidhlig #hebrides #hebrideanislands #alba #seagrass #fieldwork #mileanach

10pm at night and we're still up filtering water samples by hand for eDNA analysis. The grind never stops 😩 #neverstopneverstopping

Got to hang out with a bunch of cool people from Biota Trace testing out an automated sampler (lovingly known as my wee robot pal) to collect water samples from Loch Craignish. @seawilding.bsky.social were also kind enough to let us use their shed and kept us company 😁 🐟 🤖

Also enjoyed creating a wee make shift filtering station in the cottage. Then we were hosted by UHI Inverness, where they taught us how to carry out extractions!

Here to share some propaganda about doing fieldwork in Scotland. It's definitely always this sunny and dry all the time. No sideways rain, EVER. The rainbow was NOT a paid actor.

All in all, it was a successful first mini PhD project collecting samples for eDNA. Big love to my wonderful helpers 💛💙💜

V. jealous of the #SAMS students that get to see this view from their campus everyday ✨️ North west Scotland always delivers with the scenery.
