Chibnall is right, & to back him up as an adoptee too, it’s common for adoptees to have attachment difficulties, to form & sustain relationships, to have a fear of abandonment, & a need to feel wanted/a sense of belonging, which fits with the Doctor’s historical (1963-2017) behaviour perfectly.

Ruby only referred to her birth mother as her “real mum” in Empire of Death, the rest of the times she referred to her as her birth mother, mum, mother, and Louise.
That would also explain how often Ruby drops “My real mum. You know as in not these frauds”

He truly cared about Ian & Barbara and it’s just wonderful to see his tough guy persona slip every now and then. In the scenes before this, when Ian & Barbara finally return home he can’t even look as the ship vanishes. It breaks both of his hearts to let them go, it scares him.
