Dude in Sunnyvale, CA. Planning Commission Vice Chair. Dad of two, husband of one. Asian American advocate. Professional data wrangler (and more of course)
I'm visiting Korea next month with my wife, two kids (16&19), and my mom. My mom came to the US 52 years ago. Some of her views of Korea are frozen in time. Her past trips have always been about visiting family. I hope this one will be about memories with her grandkids in the land of her birth.

When I was a Hill staffer in 2009, a Dem trifecta was trying to pass universal healthcare. In response, Senate GOP released a memo detailing all of the tactics they in the minority could use to delay the effort as much as possible. I'm recirculating that 2009 GOP memo here. Take inspiration from it.

I thought TFG's new administration would be epically terrible. It's worse than I expected.

I'm finding that my best source of news on the situation in Korea is Bluesky.

I don't have any real insight to add. I am quite happy to see that the level of coverage in English is exponentially better than when I was finishing a BA in Asian Studies almost thirty years ago.

This is good scholarship.

Well, 윤석열 made me pretty worthless at work today. His declaration of martial law was the epitome of stupid. And now Koreans will have to show the world what the rule of law looks like. Again.

Take note, United States.

I couldn't put down _The Many Daughters of Afong Moy_ by @jamieford.bsky.social. It is an absolute masterpiece.

The issues Jamie Ford confronts are serious and pervasive. By hitting multiple time periods, the author had to do A LOT of research. Yet, it never gets ponderous or preachy. 너무 좋다!

I'm taking the rest of the week off and the college student is at home. So I made a sheet of breakfast sandwiches. King's Hawaiian FTW!

I'm not finding Bluesky to be any more enjoyable than Threads. All my Yimby follows are here so I'm here.

I don't worry about the music my kids listen to. I never have. I kind of think if you feel the need to worry about that, there are probably some elephants in the room.

I generally lift weights 3-5 times a week. I've added C25k to get some cardio in. I used to do triathlons and I'm a little embarrassed at how far my cardio has fallen. But I'm seeing pretty rapid improvement with C25k.

I've seen a few people with their Western names, Hangul name, and name in Chinese characters. I like it.

This is not empirical, but I have yet to meet someone who moved to Texas from California for any reason other than less expensive housing.

I lead a lot of people who are in the starting a family phase of life. It's all about housing and never about conservative policies.

I didn't want UT to join the SEC and D1 NCAA sports has made a mockery of the term, "scholar athlete." Nonetheless, I enjoy a Longhorn football game with my morning coffee.

I’ve said it before, will doubtless say it again: These folks are going to be permanently resentful because they’re seeking political power as a substitute for cultural power, and it’s never going to give them what they actually want.
I love how far afield this is from any problem government can address. “Now that Trump won people have to like and agree with me and not tell me I suck anymore.” bsky.app/profile/yash...
2. “For the last four years, very acutely, and I know it preceded these four years as well, but there's been kind of a pressing down. A pressing down and kind of limiting what people can say.”

The California Voting Rights Act works. Sunnyvale is perhaps the best example.

We had an interesting Sunnyvale Planning Commission meeting last night. A developer is proposing 46 townhomes on a lot zoned for multi-use.

Because of California law, by making 15% of the units BMR, the applicant is entitled to one concession and unlimited waivers.
