Just learned about this op-ed via Maddow. Grandparents for Vaccine officially launched yesterday.

"Many of today's parents, having never witnessed the devastating effects of polio or whooping cough, are being lulled into a dangerous complacency. But we grandparents remember."

Thank you.

Adding to assigned reading in the fall (along with accompanying one from last reskeet). The in-class discussions about student use of it are interesting and concerning. Anecdotally, campus hypercompetitiveness for A's, everyone else is, and lack of time to meet all semester requirements. [1/3]
you've heard about the college kids who can't do anything without ChatGPT's help—but what about the students who oppose generative A.I. for myriad reasons and refuse to rely on it as a shortcut? well, I found and spoke with a few of them here: slate.com/life/2025/07...

Happy to have colleagues who are also friends and are always willing to fight for others and what’s right even when the odds are against us.
We need joy more than ever to sustain us for the long haul. I'm SO happy for my folks whose NSF grants were reinstated this week.

Also happy to report I can now properly roll my "R's," thanks to the rising 4th grader who helped me w/my Spanish last week.

What's your praise report?
Yes actually now is a great time to share good news

Now is a great time to celebrate the good news of strangers

To be the kind of people who are happy for other people to have good things happen to them

The NSF cuts were absolutely horrific. A reminder that hurricane season is less than 3 weeks away and the western part of my state (which is still absolutely wild to think about re: location) is still trying to recover from Helen from September.
According to this, NOAA is prepping an RIF to cut more than half its workforce and NSF has been directly to cut almost half of its 1,700 staff.

Teaching is political.
Computer science is political.

The end.
I would never presume to lecture a computer scientist on how to teach their material, as I am unqualified.

This computer scientist should not pontificate about teaching subjects where he is unqualified.

Teaching about race is political. Full stop.

The House GOP just passed a draconian budget resolution, but despite GOP misinformation, this is just a blueprint, not a final bill. That means there’s still time to push back against proposed Medicaid cuts and tax breaks for the ultra-wealthy. Here’s what you need to know. 👇
