This is essentially happening with indie comics right now. Most publishers have folded, and all the money is in YA, so you’re getting a lot less weird progressive experimental work and more children’s books. It’s trickled down and with comic fests so expensive, there are less venues even for zines.
and I don’t think they realize how fragile the industry is. If you stop hiring illustrators, they’ll just move into other careers. The work they do will stop inspiring and teaching younger artists and you’ll lose an entire generation. It’s happened before.
