Amusing how 99% of people using LLMs forget how these things work:

They are advanced probability machines. They generate the next most likely token (word) based in the input and their training.

Under the hood, it’s a giant matrix multiplication that has eerily good output.

You might be wondering why we haven't updated outbreak.info for months.

Well, the reason is that GISAID cut our access in January - as they did others. Without telling us.

After a ♾️ back and forth, that is now permanent.

More on that soon - and why GISAID should not be trusted with critical data.

The spread of Mpox in Sierra Leone is unlike anything we have ever seen - and we have been keeping an eye on this bug in the region for >15 years.

Given geographical spread, 50/50 men vs women, this is no "sexual network".

This could be the next one.

It is the second confirmed measles death in the U.S. in a decade. If the outbreak continues at the current pace, the nation may lose its “elimination” status.

Anyone who works in ML/AI knows it is doomed to failure without knowing a thing about the domain. Design for useful predictions/behavior cannot happen in a vacuum, and the objective isn't a fixed point either. There's too much nonsense from deep thinkers about "replacing jobs"

Had a great time at #CROI2025! As a first-time attendee, it was a fantastic opportunity to be exposed to different topics in HIV research. Got great feedback from our work at Ribeiro’s lab. Can’t wait for next year!
#CROI2025 is winding to a close. @EmoryUniversity finished strong with 12 posters. Congrats to all who presented this week, esp. Emory's CROI New Investigator Scholarship Awardees - Tehillah Chinunga, Kamaria Dansby, Jairo Fonseca, Felipe Ten-Caten, Ashvini Vaidya, & Simon Yang!

1. Today the NIH director issued a new directive slashing overhead rates to 15%.

I want to provide some context on what that means and why it matters.

This is not business as usual.

It’s not just a change in funding priorities going forward; it is the reneging on funding agreements and is profoundly disruptive for even those grants that will be found to be compliant.

Meanwhile, trainees who often live paycheck to paycheck are going unpaid.

The world is awful. The world is much better. The world can be much better.

All three statements are true at the same time. Understanding this is key to solving big global problems.

We believe data & research can help us understand both the problems we face & the progress that’s possible. 🧵

That should settle it, right? The problem, of course, it won't because we're dealing with conspiracy theories and not scientific inquiry - no amount of additional data will change un-evidenced beliefs.
