#TheBeautyOfTransport is looking at the newly unveiled GBR branding - not just what it is, but how we ended up with it, and how far it will actually spread. It's a long article this time, so plenty to keep you going over the holidays. Season's Greetings!
Union Flag Blues: the Branding of Great British Railways
In a blaze of publicity, the branding for Great British Railways, state-owned future operator of some of the privatised British railway network, was unexpectedly launched earlier this month, a mere four years after Great British Railways was first announced. In typical British transport policy tradition, the government almost immediately undermined its own efforts to create a unifying visual identity for the English railway network, having long since ceded the battle to brand the British railway network.

Usual chaos on our Christmas getaway train on the west coast main line. Train rammed with big cases, reservations not loaded so our seats are taken, and onboard shop closed due to a technical issue.

Did some in-person card sorting of 92 pages of user feedback with my team today.

So much easier and more engaging than doing it remotely via Mural.

You’d think that there is a clear distinction between the concept of “an organisation” and “a physical location”, but it’s actually more like the space-time continuum with a big blurry space in the middle.

Why do so many tv dramas feature someone being injured or killed whilst cycling? Ted Lasso, For All Mankind, Slow Horses, Lessons in Chemistry, the list goes on.

It’s such a common trope that it removes any element of surprise.

(Plus it makes cycling look more dangerous than it is!)

This sketch of legacy vs contemporary disciplines in government rings true for me.
Are a small number of legacy disciplines dragging the whole of government down? A provocation:

Enjoyed visiting a bunch of pharmacies in North London today, for research chats with their pharmacists. Learnt loads! There’s an amazing variety in how they all operate.

Was super cold out though! 🥶

After a day of teaching designers to code I came home and had to help my daughter with her coding homework.

Sadly hers involved a terrible visual interface with no ability to edit the underlying code.
