Meet Polychrome! A 62”x62” cozy beauty made from many strips of botanically dyed fabrics. Named Polychrome both for the literal meaning of “many colors” and for the Rainbow’s daughter in the original Oz books. The backing is flannel and was dipped haphazardly in an indigo vat and looks like the sky.

A corner of the quilt is flipped over and held up by my hand so you can see the backing of the quilt; flannel dyed light blue with indigo. Hand embroidered around the label with unbleached cotton thread is the word “polychrome”.

Any quilters/sewers have experience working off grid?? I’ll be moving off grid next year and I’m trying to figure out what to do about an iron that doesn’t involve having to use a generator. I’ll have a wood stove so I can go old school in the winter, but I’d like to be able to piece in summer 😩

I haven’t shown knitting here yet! Here is my first real attempt at color patterns about 5 years ago. These patterns are from the Faroe Islands. Color work with worsted weight yarn is no joke on the hands, but it is so warm I can wear it instead of a coat (with other layers) for much of the winter!

I am wearing a navy blue and white sweater that I knit using patterns traditionally from the Faroe Islands. A photo of the same spot maybe an hour after the first photo. The fire is lit and I am sitting in a folding chair next to it cutting rose leaves into a 5 gallon iron pot preparing to make them into a dye.

Larger pieces that I spend a lot of time crafting always feel like they have a being-hood of their own. With my quilts, this is expressed with a name. This babe was named by a beloved beekeeper friend who saw honeybees dancing though the patterns in the dye. #quilts #slowcraft #fiberart #naturaldye

Still recovering for this flu 3+ weeks later. Feeling very disconnected from anything good feeling, but was able to get myself to start this spiderweb quilt I’ve been dreaming about. I’ve lost my skill with blocking fabric square, so my foundation pieces are off which will bite me later. ⬇️

Oof. Despite strict Covid protocols, I am down for the count with one of these nasty respiratory situations going around! First time I’ve been sick in 4+ years. Thankful for home molecular tests so I know it isn’t Covid! Stay safe out there! Mask up and sanitize! Here are some patchwork pillows ❤️
Two patchwork pillows I made on a brown leather chair. They are both made with many colored strips of fabric (yellow, gray, blue, green, brown, beige, pink) dyed with plants (and an insect called cochineal which make a pink dye here). One pillow the strips are all horizontal across the pillow. The other the strips are placed diagonal on 4 squares and arranged in a diamond pattern on the pillow. Two more patchwork pillows on the same brown leather chair. The one on the left is made with lavender, green, pink, light blue, and different shades of brown in a pattern that begins with a square in the middle and adds four triangles, one on each side, again and again to get a bigger square. The pillow on the right is made from strips of fabric in a log cabin pattern, kind of like a square spiral. The strips are in different shades of grays, blues, pinks, yellows, with some lavender, green, and brown.

Here is an accessibility tool I use for quilting! I have hEDS, a degenerative connective tissue disorder that results in hyper mobile joints. Hand quilting can be brutal on the hands! After my first quilt, I added a foam grip to these pliers and they help so much. Other quilting accessibility ideas?
This is a picture of the pliers to pull the needle through when hand quilting. It has a blue foam grip on one side to make it more ergonomic to hold. It’s sitting on top of a quilt I’m currently working on hand quilting. The patchwork is stripes of different botanically dyed colors with hand quilting stitches in blue indigo dyed thread.

Here are a couple examples of pieces dyed with rose leaves co-mordanted with an iron pot. Some of the clothes in the first pic were bundle dyed with rose leaves, making a beautiful mottled pattern (sometimes clear leaf prints). #botanicaldye #fiberart #slowart #gray #naturaldye #textileartist
This is a picture of 4 pieces of cloth hanging wet from the rings of a ladder after coming out of the dye bath. 3 of the cloths are square and where dyed by wrapping rose leaves up in the cloth as a bundle and then cooked in an iron pot. The iron modifies the pigment and leaves the cloth a beautiful mottled gray with outlines of the leaves and sometimes a little green pigment from the leaves. The 4th cloth is a long scarf, gray with circles of white. My hand is holding it up slightly. You can see fallen leaves on the ground and stacked wood in the background. This is a picture of a finished and dry bandanna laid out on a flat rock. It is different shades of gray and has a diamond and triangle pattern dyed into it because of how it was folded before dyeing.

For the past 4 years since relocating back to Vermont, I’ve been near enough to my parents’ home to do most of my dyeing there over an open fire. It is deeply romantic and I love it so much. Also, using an iron pot for co-mordant is the only way I work with iron. #botanicaldye #fiberartist
This is a photo of my botanical dyeing set up. It’s a little fire place made of fire brick with an old metal grate over the top. A large iron pot is balanced on top of the grate and a fire is burning underneath. The pot is full of clippings from rose bushes about to be cooked in water to extract dye.

First time quilting with raw silk! Some of this I dyed years ago and do not remember what I used 😱. ✨Mysterious✨. What I do remember: yellow onion skins, rose leaves and goldenrod both cooked in an iron pot. The border is a rose leaf bundle dye. Cautionary tale: label your fabrics 😝 #fiberartist

The work that comes through me emerges in its own time, a reality that is not super conducive to thriving in capitalism. I’m not an assembly line (though I have deep respect for folks who work assemble lines), or a cookie cutter, and mass production isn’t really my thing. #quilts #fiberarts #slowart

Before colonialism, capitalism and industrialization, all that our ancestors crafted was useful and beautiful and full of energy and spirit. A quilt made from fabric I dyed with plants in shades of pink, blue, and gray. The patchwork is done in “log cabin” squares and lined up so diagonal lines of pink, blue, and gray cross the quilt. It is tacked up on the side of my dad’s tool shed.
