I may have to give this a watch 👀
A recommendation! HANGOVER SQUARE (1945) is a masterful horror-noir about a classical composer - pianist who goes into murderous fugue states when he hears certain sounds, forgetting his acts when he wakes up. Atmospheric and ominous, with a climax that has to be witnessed. The bonfire scene alone..

Saw this in Southampton Waterstones and just had to get my hands on it! I already have a beautiful copy of Stoker's short stories, so this is a copy I can highlight to pieces!

It also has the newly discovered Gibbet Hill 🦇

Did you know?

In the Victorian era, there was a special chair designed specifically for courtship.

The courting or conversation chair allowed a young couple to sit together—without actually touching.

A chaperone would be present in the same room, seated in a separate chair.

Starting to think these headaches are Kernberg specific 🫠 W. Grossman and C. Brenner are a gentle breeze by comparison

Reading him feels like my own personal masochism, how apt.
Diving back into psychoanalysis and now I have a headache.

Coincidence? I think not.

Thanks Kernberg.

In some parts of Shropshire, there was a belief that one should never look behind them once a journey had started. This was because the Devil was always close to the traveller, waiting to claim their soul.

Could you mentor a neurodivergent, early career humanities academic? I did this last time: it's not a big time commitment and is massively rewarding. You don't necessarily have to be neurodivergent/in humanities yourself. @ndhumanities.bsky.social
Remember, you can sign up to our mentorship scheme here: ndhumanities.com/mentorship-s....

Deadline extended to 14 May!

Abebooks saving my bacon once again! Two books for £50 that would have cost me about £90 brand new! 🥳

Finally reading through this number! Surprisingly easy to digest and would recommend for anyone casting their eye towards minor characters in fiction!

Definitely fueling my inspiration for my next PhD chapter 🦇

In the Victorian era, a rather large contingent of the population believed in the therapeutic benefits of sun gazing.

Doctors and scientists of the time warned against it, but many people ignored them.

Permanent eye damage was their reward. 🤷‍♀️
