For those interested after today's #LTHEchat, I wrote the 2nd (more positive) part of this article - I think you need a subscription whether insitutional or individual to see it. Do teaching fellowships actually improve teaching? www.timeshighereducation.com/depth/do-tea...
Do teaching fellowships actually improve teaching?
If you want to get promoted in UK academia you will probably need to apply for an Advance HE fellowship. But there is widespread scepticism that this extended ‘box-ticking exercise’ improves pedagogy,...

#LTHEchat A6 I am completely biased: I love our validated PGCert where staff gather together to learn, to share and discuss - to experience new things and reflect on them - and in the process be supported to complete a PSF Logbook. This is active, powerful CPD with a Fellowship route integrated.
Q6 - Looking ahead, what do you think are the next major challenges for those who teach and support learning? How might engagement with fellowship and the PSF help you to navigate and reflect on these challenges?

A6 #LTHEchat efficiency savings are a massive challenge, redistributing workload across fewer staff and reducing opportunities for promotion. Engagement with fellowship might just maintain a place in the pipeline until progression is possible

That's why I tell all our PGCerters to collect those quotes during every teaching session - or afterwards! Not that I remember to do this myself! But it helps if your students write reflective learning logs - for there will be quotes in there to mine! #LTHEchat

I hear ya, Louise. I think it’s important to pause and recognise (be annoyed about) the wider context and challenges at times. A little bit of that can be motivating, I think #LTHEchat

About to do a research project looking at some of these points! Teaching observations can be such a great opportunity to develop but I don’t think many places welcome open door policies #LTHEchat

#LTHEchat A3 The main challenges were remembering to give examples of practice rather than just talk about practice. This is something then to continually help our PGCerters with: Give an example of that - how do you know it worked - capture a quote from a student/a peer. They don't want to boast!
Q3 - What challenges have you encountered when trying to evidence the effectiveness of your practice for a fellowship application, and how did you overcome them?

A6 The major challenge is keeping a job & remaining 'motivated' to put in some of the 'hard work' of collating evidence to support their claim.

When it comes down to it, while the PSF provides a vital guide to work, the 'wider context', is perhaps too much at present. Sorry for pessimism #lthechat
