11. It’s not just that people are wasting their time. "Population concern” also distracts people from things we *can* change. And, in many cases, transfers blame for the huge consumption impacts of wealthy people to Black and Brown people in poorer nations. At worst it’s straight-up racism. 11/12

5. Intervention today (or in any recent decades), if it has any effect at all, will instead hasten the depopulation dive on the other side of the peak: a trend that is just as inevitable, whose impacts are brilliantly summarised here by David Runciman: www.lrb.co.uk/the-paper/v4...

1. I hate to see good people wasting their time and energy. And there’s perhaps no greater waste of time and energy than seeking to change the trajectory of the human population. It’s not just futile, but also a massive distraction from things we CAN change. This thread seeks to explain why. 🧵1/12

A new study shows repeated heatwaves can age you as much as smoking or drinking.

By appeasing the far right, you do not weaken it. You strengthen it.
While weakening your own position.

I see this so often that I think it might qualify as a law:

The time people take to notice demographic trends is equal to the time required for the results to materialise.

In other words, however obvious the maths might be, we cannot or will not see it coming.
Trump thinks immigrants will destroy Europe. The truth is the opposite.
This column is about the long arc of population change, the hybridity of European cultures, and the widely-misinterpreted results of demographic momentum.
Big issues we need to understand.

Yes, things were rotten before. But it was such a breathtaking breach of trust and display of impunity that it broke something subtle but crucial: a belief that, for all their faults, our societies are broadly democratic. The breach has only widened since. As trust collapses, demagogues prosper. 2/3
