Every year Gallup, a pollster, asks people in more than 140 countries how they felt the day before they were surveyed. Our charts break down the data
The world has become surprisingly less grumpy
But our analysis of polling data shows an uneven recovery in how people feel

We just released version 3.1 of WhoGov, a global dataset on members of government from 1966-2023. The update fixes the mistakes that came to our attention while creating the Paths to Power dataset + mistakes users have notified us of

More additions and updates to WhoGov are on their way, including:

A research note for version 3.1 of the dataset, the codebook, which describes the variables in the two datasets, and the online appendix are found here:

Why don’t we just invent a few dumb prices and give them to Trump in exchange for supporting Ukraine and reducing tariffs? It might work…

Russia's war is increasingly coming home: In 2024, Gazprom recorded losses of $12.89 billion. Sanctions and declining revenues due to the Ukraine invasion have severely impacted the company. To offset these losses, domestic gas prices in Russia will rise by 10.3% starting July 1

We also propose to lower the oil price cap from 60 to 45 $ per barrel.

Oil is one third of Russia’s government revenues.

We need to cut this source.

We'll discuss how to best coordinate with partners at the G7 Summit ↓

Caribbean countries remain among the worst globally, with the exception of Cuba, which surpasses even Argentina and Brazil.

Investing just one-third of the Social Climate Fund could subsidise up to 20 million heat pumps across the EU by 2032. This would be enough to reach all energy-poor households in nine EU countries and slash EU gas demand by 11% — nearly as much as the EU imported from Russia in 2024.
