In Pakistan, scientists are piloting a camera trap program that uses AI to detect snow leopards in real time, sending texts to alert local farmers to move their livestock to safety. The goal is to reduce livestock losses from snow leopards, as well as the number of retaliatory snow leopard killings.
Could AI text alerts help save snow leopards from extinction?
In Pakistan, it's hoped newly-developed AI cameras could warn villagers via text to move their livestock if snow leopards enter the area.

As apex predators, tigers and other big cats are vital to maintaining healthy ecosystems. Historically, conservation strategies have ignored the local communities that live in and around protected areas. Yet tigers live in some of the most densely populated areas (e.g., India).

Cultural beliefs and local traditions can influence human-wildlife interactions, but are often overlooked in conservation.

For example, across Africa, some groups still use leopard, serval, or lion skins and bones in traditional rituals and ceremonies.
Study reveals overlooked cultural threat to wildcats across Africa
LILONGWE ― Habitat loss and direct persecution of large carnivores are well-documented threats, but the role that cultural demand plays in the fortunes of many species of wildcats is poorly understood...

By the late 1800s, pumas were extinct from the eastern United States due to overhunting and habitat loss.
In recent years, however, some dispersing pumas have appeared in the Midwest, suggesting pumas might recolonize in greater numbers.

How is drought linked in California to human-wildlife conflict? Climate change can result in reduced water availability from less rainfall. This can affect vegetation growth and lead to reduced forage for herbivores (like deer) to eat. In turn, this can prey availability for carnivores like pumas.
