A recent encounter with a juvenile mountain lion in Southern CA led to OC Parks temporarily closing Whiting Ranch Wilderness Park.

Juveniles (like the one) tend to be more curious (vs aggressive) but this decision was made for the safety of both people and the lion.

The guiña, a small cat found in South America, has been reclassified by the IUCN as Least Concern, following new data on population estimates. Previously, the species was classified as Vulnerable to Extinction. While this might seem like good news, it doesn’t mean the guiña is no longer at risk.

The newest California State Wildlife Action Plan (SWAP 2025) still lists pumas as a Candidate Endangered species in CA. Populations on the Central Coast and Southern CA are especially isolated.

Felidae recently photographed a puma moving through a mixed-use landscape (e.g. golf course, farm, preserve). With increasing habitat fragmentation, pumas like this individual are forced to navigate mixed-use landscapes, which include both natural and human-dominated areas.

Pumas prefer to avoid humans, but due to habitat loss, they are occasionally forced to move along the urban edge. They are mostly active from dusk until dawn, and prefer to stick to forested areas.
