Breaking News! We have received our first batches of images from our Bhutan Wild Cat Health Project. Check out this series of a leopard's afternoon nap.
Not only is this incredibly cute, but this also provides us with some awesome info!

From clearing vegetation to performing a walk test, each station goes through the same protocol to ensure we are consistent throughout the study.
After cameras are placed, they are left for 1-2 months before we return to review the footage!

Curious how we are selecting sites to place camera traps in Bhutan? Get a behind-the-scenes view of what goes into placing a camera trap and what we look for while out in the field. Oftentimes, game trails (i.e. routes wildlife regularly use) make for great spots to monitor.

Placing camera traps requires expert knowledge of the landscape, cat behavior, and camera trapping techniques. As the team continues to place cameras, we are incredibly excited to see what our cameras record!
Stay tuned for more.

Felidae has been hard at work getting cameras deployed for the Bhutan Wild Cat Health Project. Get a sneak peek into our efforts!
Moving across the high-elevation landscape is no joke, but the team has been working diligently to place cameras in the best spots to monitor the elusive wild cats.

Everything in nature is connected — and ecology is the science that helps us understand how.
This interconnected system shows why it’s essential to monitor species, their environments, and the interactions between them.

Happy Halloween! We hope you have a purrfectly spooky Halloween with plenty of treats! These bobcats will be out hunting for their own treats, but they limit the spread of Lyme disease! Do you know why?

How much do we know about the Manul? Last week, Felidae ecologist, Alys, traveled to Kazakhstan for a workshop with the Manul Working Group and learn about how this small cat is doing in Central Asia. We look forward to collaborating with these awesome folks in the future!

Today is International Day of Climate Action! As climate change continues to alter climate regimes, animals like bobcats and mountain lions face increasing pressures. Changes in vegetation can lead to reduced biomass for deer and other herbivores, reducing the prey availability for carnivores.

With fewer than 10,000 individuals remaining, this elusive cat faces growing human pressures, from habitat loss to conflict and climate change. Did you know snow leopards can travel over 25 miles (40 km) in a single night?

As one of our 9 focal species in the new Bhutan Wild Cat Health Project, we’re excited to celebrate International Snow Leopard Day!
Despite its name, the snow leopard is actually more closely related to the tiger than to the leopard, and unlike most big cats, it can’t roar.

Did you know toxoplasmosis can be carried by both domestic and wild cats? Toxoplasmosis is a parasitic disease capable of spreading to humans. Toxoplasmosis can lead to increased dopamine levels, altering wildlife's behavior and making them more likely to engage in risky behavior.

Felidae recently photographed a puma moving through a mixed-use landscape (e.g. golf course, farm, preserve). With increasing habitat fragmentation, pumas like this individual are forced to navigate mixed-use landscapes, which include both natural and human-dominated areas.

Ever wonder what to do if you encounter a puma?
Pumas prefer to avoid humans, but due to habitat loss, they are occasionally forced to move along the urban edge. They are mostly active from dusk until dawn, and prefer to stick to forested areas.

Forest loss remains a threat, and today, they are still at risk due to climate change, invasive species, landscape disturbance, and fire suppression.

Only 5% of California’s redwood forests remain, yet they’re critical habitat for pumas, a candidate endangered species. These forests provide cool, stable habitats with diverse prey and cover.

Today is National Feral Cat Day!
Feral cats can have devastating impacts on wildlife, including their closest relatives, wild cats. When feral cats are able to move freely, they can cause a host of issues, ranging from the spread of diseases to hybridizing with local wild cats.

Mother bobcats raise their kittens alone for almost a full year. During this time, they teach them how to stalk, pounce, and hunt-often through play and by bringing them live prey to practice with.
