The last menu there is likely the most complex UI of the entire game, and still some janky first-draft design to polish, but the data entry minigame it kicks off will be straightforward, and I hope, fun.

Your notebook now expresses your field surveys with identifiable "habitat seals" for a given level (I think I'll call levels "patches") in the game. You'll be able to cash them in for money or consume them in research work.
