I had the pleasure of being a test knitter for this project, which is now live. It’s a satisfying and speedy knit, so go make your own now, and wear the message proudly.

More details on Ravelry (friganti) soon.

A trip to Newport and New Bedford, two neighboring cities that typify the story of extreme wealth and exploitation of nature. The New Bedford Whaling Museum is a gem; among the items that stand out is Duke Riley’s clever “scrimshaw” on a plastic jug.

Catbird nest update: some time this morning 2 of 3 eggs hatched. Wee naked babes, welcome to the world!

Three perfect jewel-like eggs. I found mama catbird sitting on her stick nest in a dogwood shrub by the stream. When she flew away I took the opportunity to quickly check out what she was working on.

In other international news: just in time for a sweltering start of summer heat bomb, I finished this sweater. And I rather love it, despite the button placket pulling a bit wonky-woo.

pattern: Norda Tee by Anna Enge
yarn: Purl Soho Good Wool in Olive Oil

This is my neighbor’s hay field!

I know rural America gets a (sometimes deserved) bad rap, but communities like my tiny town are on the frontline of crucial habitat conservation. This is a proud achievement.

Proud of Albany for showing up today with supportive and enthusiastic energy, and proud of this one who made it through her 2nd protest from beginning to end (the chair helped) 📷 @ericslee71.bsky.social

Molto eccitante! Officially, my first Italian vote, done! Doing my part to reach quorum, because if the fascists are telling people not to vote, it’s probably a clue that you really should vote. Si si si si si, because conservatives (everywhere and as a general rule) can stuff it.

It’s ephemerals hunting season! The marsh marigolds have come and faded, but the interior forest is now speckled with color…violets at peak, geraniums opening, and bonus: the evocative Equisetums awake + fruiting. 📸 2 horsetail species (growing together) starflower, and the charming gaywing.

Large gathering today in front of the NYS Capitol despite the cold rain. I couldn’t see most of the crowd but it was clearly a big HandsOff representation from “Smallbany”.

My prognostic interpretation: behold the American people doing away with the battered remnant of the DT administration.

All the recent attacks on higher education, and it being my 25th reunion year, I’m feeling all kinds of nostalgia for my college years @vassar.bsky.social 🩷🩶
Happy International Women's Day!

Pictured is the Great Window at Thompson Memorial Library at Vassar College, depicting Lady Elena Lucrezia Cornaro Piscopia, the first woman to earn a doctorate.

The library will be open to the public for the next two weeks.

Did you know the most powerful force for climate action is LOVE—for our children, their future, and the world they’ll inherit?

That's right! Research shows this message moves hearts 12x more than jobs and 2x more than extreme weather.

Yes! My favorite place to buy apples (and THE BEST apple cider donuts anywhere!)
BREAKING: The UFW has won yet another NY certification victory. An overwhelming majority of the 50+ workers at Golden Harvest apple farm (south of Albany) chose to join the union.

This is the 8th UFW victory in New York since 2023 and the 1st victory of 2025.

Humans intervene in landscapes at all scales, speeding things up, slowing them down and generating cascading effects far beyond our control.

In a sense we've refashioned time itself, altering environmental rhythms & cycles to meet infrastructural needs. We try to trick time, but the trick is on us.
Accelerated and Decelerated Landscapes
People who study, design, or care for landscapes need to become experts at the techniques, knowledges, and ethics of bending time.
