1. The timing of this is something.
2. The Bears belong in Illinois.
3. The team paid off its portion of soldier field, which it doesn’t own, decades ago. The state didn’t.
4. Asking for infrastructure is defensible.
5. But the state has bigger problems and no money.

As always, a mess.

It is bad when someone is shot for their political views.

It is bad when someone is shot for the words they say.

It is bad when kids get shot at school.

We should do something about weapons of death in the hands of the insane.

"You won't be there to enjoy your HoF induction" is punishment enough.

On the other hand, they imposed that penalty on Santo, for no sin greater than desperately wanting to get in.

I also, as a fairly new Catholic, exchanged opinions with our Parish Priest. I gave an opinion, and he exchanged it with the speed and vigor of a Nolan Ryan fastball.

Of course, as a 2nd grader, I was the theological superior to our Vice President, so perhaps the Vatican was a bit gentler.

Jon Stewart MASSIVELY over-estimates himself, and his audience doubles that error, because he’s pithy. Pith isn’t intelligence. Wit isn’t insight.

I doubt his capacity for reflection, but his viewers need to seriously reconsider who they listen to. Start somewhere without “comedy” in the name.
“I gotta tell you, I did not think [Trump] would get this authoritarian this fast,” Jon Stewart admitted.

There are few institutions more quietly essential to the function of modern life than the FDIC. They *regularly* swoop in, and silently clean up mistakes while making average working people whole.
FDIC is a big reason that people have confidence in banks. Removing that will make it harder to find safe places to save.
BREAKING — DOGE will descend upon Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation (FDIC) buildings tomorrow, an agency source tells me.

FDIC is responsible for insuring all commercial/personal US bank accounts for up to $250k and regulating banks. Scary in light of Trump’s manipulation of markets this week.

They came of age in an economic crisis caused by their parents, struggled to put down roots because of their parents housing policies, couldn’t advance when their parents wouldn’t retire, and now have had economic war declared upon them.

Rage? They should be a mob in the streets.
I know I make this point perennially, but the Millennial rage will be a real force in American politics very, very soon.

This is unconscionable. We have to impose additional liability on vaccine manufacturers, but if it's ag, we must be free from accountability.
The Iowa Senate just approved a bill giving pesticide manufacturers immunity from lawsuits.
Although Rs have a 34-16 majority, bill passed by 26 votes to 21.
All Ds present voted no, joined by Rs Alons, Campbell, Salmon, Sires, Taylor, and Westrich.
Rs Evans & Lofgren were absent.

I think a lot of modern stability is premised on my tribe no longer attacking your tribe, even though we’re both members.

But we have to be vigilant against the person who pushes tribes to violence, because it’s easily done.

Moreso when systems are being destroyed, decaying that stability.
The author of "First they came for . . ." confession. "The poem makes it sound like Nazis win because “good people” fail to fight them. But Niemöller’s actual history suggests that Nazis win because “good people” hate the same people the Nazis hate and therefore find the fascist program congenial."
This is a fascinating, disturbing, and complicated piece from @nberlat.bsky.social.

What if we had a plan where only liberal married women were allowed to vote!
Texas Rep. Introduces The Safeguard American Voter Eligibility (SAVE) Act preventing 69 million married women from being able to register to vote.

It requires a birth certificate that matches their current name, which is a problem for women who changed their legal name when they got married
Married women could be stopped from voting under SAVE Act
The act could affect whether married women without passports are able to register to vote.

As long as the US rights holder maintains the Sky coverage ESPN has made available, I don’t care who owns the rights.

I’d strongly prefer F1TV stay available as well, because multi-viewer is the best free product on earth, but that isn’t for everybody.

This is true, and caused in large part by the prevailing powers prioritizing what they wanted to be true (peace, avoiding a direct by limited conflict) over what was *actually* true (a madman testing limits).

We never get to dictate our own reality, but we always get to choose it.
When you study the period, it’s remarkable how much the Allies could have undercut Hitler’s political momentum if they had just stood up to him reoccupying the Rhineland.

There is a lot to be said about the TikTok situation, but I think this is the most illustrative:

The people who are the most vocal that “capitalism only cares about money, not people” aren’t the least bit curious why a business is voluntarily closing rather than selling for tens of billions.

Between 9 and 930 am, on a beautiful Friday in January, the Supreme Court sent an entire generation into a tizzy, and the outgoing President declared the Constitution amended (five years ago).

We could slow things down just a little.
