My dear friend’s niece, who in October developed sepsis when a Georgia hospital refused her a D&C after a miscarriage, will be taken off life support tomorrow.

I don’t know the names of the countless others who have suffered and will suffered because of anti-abortion laws.

But her name was Haley.

I listened to the whole debate today and was struck by the mutual respect shown, the avoidance of irrelevant politicking (with the notable exception of Robert Jenrick) & the willingness of parliamentarians to take on the heavy responsibility asked of them. The conversation can continue.

The lack of shame & embarrassment expressed by those MPs relying heavily on the current state of palliative care provision in this country as a reason for opposing the bill is striking. We were world leaders in palliative care yet its funding has never been prioritised. MPs could have changed this.

It’s days like today one misses the established sense of community built up over many years in the other place. It will come, but for now it’s hard to reach out to colleagues at Sussex University dealing with yesterday’s announcement of a voluntary severance scheme.
