40 years ago, Sussex Professor the late Sir Harry Kroto FRS made one of the most important scientific discoveries of the 20th century: C60, or Buckminsterfullerene. The breakthrough won the 1996 Nobel Prize in Chemistry, with his legacy living on across the world and at Sussex.

A team at the Sussex Centre for Quantum Technologies has secured a £250,000 grant for their work on quantum magnetometers. The devices use variations in the Earth’s magnetic field to pinpoint their location, allowing ships, land vehicles & aircraft to navigate even without satellite signals.
