just learned blueprint functions placed in an event graph that only sometimes return a value (i.e. iterate through loop, return matching case, no other return node in the function) will cache the returned value and not update to the output to nothing/null if you run them and a return node isn't hit.

The thing that sucks is that when you only have a placeholder asset, but there is some sort of build or milestone coming up that demands a half-way finished piece.
Tbh a lot of wasted work goes into making something halfway good multiple times, instead of making one good thing later.

In gamedev, if you're using a placeholder asset, best practices involve marking it as placeholder so garishly and offensively clearly PLACEHOLDER that you can't possibly miss it. Also flagging that asset in the dev process so it can be identified quickly before the final build.

i have now seen all of inuyasha, with the exception of the final act. a year+ of nearly weekly watch sessions. here is my ranking of the movies:
4. Fire on the Mystic Island - too complicated but at least it has Sesshomaru.

A thought I have liked to follow recently is "the story can't hurt you."
You can make your UI less usable, your gameplay more imbalanced, you can be more abrasive or less, but it's worth it if that choice is telling the story.

kinda wish fewer games were roguelikes these days :/
roguelikes are great bc they turn traditionally linear genres into recursive sandboxes. this hones lots of elements of the game's design and increases the inherent meaning of its content, but sacrifices the power of narrative context.
