This is a must read from @foxpack.bsky.social on hypernormalization.

"Witnessing large-scale systems slowly unravel in real time can be profoundly surreal and frightening. The hypernormalization framework offers a way to understand what we’re feeling and why."
Systems are crumbling – but daily life continues. The dissonance is real
If everything feels broken but strangely normal, the Soviet-era concept of hypernormalization can help

"It can be argued, with Vance, that elected officials should care first for their own citizens. But from a Christian perspective leaders can and must respond to global as well as national and local moral horizons. Falling back on a narrowly nationalist “America First” agenda is bad theology."

Authoritarianism is not only a political issue, it’s a theological one. The human capacity for evil is too great to allow individuals to have too much unchecked political power.
Christians believe human fallibility too great to allow unchecked power for our leaders
(RNS) — If the political realm will not stand up to the autocratic pretensions of the current president, it falls to people of faith to take nonviolent action.

Excellent reporting by @sahilkapur.bsky.social. The math has always been clear. To cut government spending as much as Trump, Musk, and the Republicans want will have huge impacts on the most vulnerable and marginalized in our country and around the world. It will be them that suffer most.
This is the cul de sac Republicans have been running into for years. It's easy to talk about rooting out waste and fraud (which isn't a new endeavor). But cutting spending enough to meaningfully reduce red ink requires actions that affect their voters and carry a political price.
NEW: Republicans cannot meet their own budget target without cutting Medicare or Medicaid, budget office says

The math is simple 👇

House Budget requires E&C to cut spending by $880 billion.

CBO says E&C oversees $581 billion outside Medicare/Medicaid.

Since writing this article, I have received messages from federal civil servants who tell me it is accurate, and that they are frightened. Please share this with anyone who doesn't understand the scale of the transformation.
