Whew. Day 12 was a winner. Smoked octopus. Japanese sweet potato bisque 🍠. A bunch of accoutrements. Freaking delicious.

Day 11: we are iterating on a theme here, mostly because it works. A smear of sour cream and mayo, some smoked wild kippers, capers, and a grating of cured egg yolk. Admittedly, the TJs smoked herring we had on Day 1 was tastier, and I liked that it was in oil. I’m guessing a lot cheaper too.

Day 10: we were out in the cold making our voices heard today. So treated ourselves with some fresh tagliatelle from Solo Pane, the rest of the anchovies dissolved in hot olive oil, toasted pecans, wilted arugula, and lemon sardines, with some Romano cheese and salsa macha.

Day 9, a Friday after a long first week back at work, was anchovies, used in martinis.

Day 8 was exhausting, so we kept it nice and simple… The Canned Sardine subreddit has *thoughts* about Fishwife brand, but I am loving trying these tins that we got in our gift pack.

Today is brutal. Day 7 of January: threw a can of razor clams into a batch of pasta, added butter, cream, cheese, and just self-soothed with carbs and tinned fish. Done in less than 15 minutes. Now time for bed.

It went on some winter veggie bisque with roasted/pureed honeynut squash, black futsu, rutabaga, and a package of Spanish Matiz brand roasted chestnuts from the pantry. I’m kicking myself for forgetting to add the rye crisps that I bought just for this soup…

Day 6: much more successful. Grabbed the first of the Fishwife tins from the very generous gift we received from a friend that visited recently. The smoked salmon was delicious. Dare I say buttery. Not overly smokey.

Day 5: so far the most disappointing, despite me saving this one for a while. Rillettes de langoustine with tiger nuts. I served it on some toasted focaccia. It was meh. Husband said it tasted like cat food. We’ve never actually eaten our cats’ food but it definitely smelled like it. 🤷🏻‍♀️

Day 4 of Tinned Fish January: sardines in mustard sauce, on toast, with sliced pears, chili crisp, and dill, with a drizzle of maple syrup. It was better than I expected. Kind of reminded me of honey mustard pretzels.

Some process photos… this version used pompano, amaranth, Thai eggplant and okra.

Today our friends came over and taught me how to make Angolan calulu. It was delicious. And I had the honor of stirring the funge 💪 What a lovely way to spend a Saturday.

This one made me think about my introduction to non-tuna tinned fish. I remember a breakfast buffet in Tbilisi Georgia, at the Sheraton Hotel in 2006, where I discovered pickled mackerel in tomato sauce and fell in love with it. They didn’t have it every morning but I always hoped I’d find it.

Taking a break from the news to make some sardines on toast. Day 3 of Tinned Fish January… 🗓️ Sardines on toast with some ricotta and a few cured olives.

Day 2 dinner stayed on theme: arugula + spinach, more roasted rutabaga (it was a big rutabaga…), skipjack tuna from Bela, some Asian pear, and some pistachios. I dressed the root veg with some Dijon, sherry vinegar, and maple syrup while warming it. Added capers later. Wish I’d had Manchego to add.

Oops. Oysters, not mussels! Those are in the queue.

If you ever find yourself in “the other Portland,” come on by to pop some tins 😹

Day 2: I repurposed some of yesterday’s Rancho Gordo black eyed peas, leftover rice, tossed in some roasted rutabaga and a handful of fresh spinach, then grabbed a tin of smoked mussels. It was very reminiscent of a Hoppin’ John with the smokiness. Big hit.

I mean, it’s borderline compulsive for me. I fall in love with the tins and then I want to save them for a special occasion. Plus, it’s one of the only types of gifts that I am excited to receive, so now I have enablers in my life adding to the accumulation.

The official Day 1 selection was simply the oldest one I was able to grab quickly, and that turned out to be smoked herring. Turns out that herring is a traditional lucky New Year food, which I hadn’t realized.

Some other pre-January inclusions… (they were all delicious).

I got a bit of a head start before the New Year, what with our Feast of the Seven Fishes over Christmas. I managed to sneak some flaked sardines into the marinara and the martinis had anchovy stuffed olives.

I’ve been accumulating cans of tinned fish for ages, but I tend to save them and ration them instead of actually using them. Also, my bloodwork shows low vitamin D. So, it seems fitting to have a Tinned Fish January. One tin per day through the end of the month.

Medicare for All would save $450B a year.

Every dollar spent on food stamps generates $1.50-$1.80 in economic activity.

Each dollar going to low-wage workers adds $1.20 to the economy overall.

It’s not about what this country can or can’t afford.

It’s about priorities.
