Many Arabs like to engage in revisionist history and pretend they were oppressed by the Ottomans. Don’t buy into it. They were a privileged group within the empire all the way up to the point that ethnonationalism caught on with the Turks.

Colonialism has a lot to answer for in terms of its abuses around the world. One thing it should never apologise for, however, is disempowering the Ottoman Empire. They continued to practise slavery to the very end, as does much of the Arab world today. It’s not defensible. It never was.

The Abrahamic faiths are fucked up. It’s not just true of Christian-conservatives. It’s true everywhere. These faiths pose the only true existential threat to the rights of women and sexual minorities. Quit dick-riding Muslims just because they’re browner on average. It’s a dumb reason.

The Arab ethnonationalists and Islamists of today were the MAGA of the Ottoman Empire. Britain used them to divide and conquer just like Putin is using MAGA here to do it to us. None of these fuckers are aligned with progressive objectives or values. Wake the fuck up.
